Is it really going to be worth it or is this just some ploy to rake in new dollars?

The Beatles Remastered CDs - Stereo & Mono Box Sets Out on 9/9/9

1987: The Beatles Albums Are First Released On CD

CDs were still pretty new technology at this time and so it shouldn't really be too surprising that the original mastering job done for The Beatles albums first release on CD wasn't particularly good. In fact it's now seen by most experts as a downright lousy job. The packaging for these CD releases wasn't particularly good either.

September 9, 2009: The Beatles Remastered

On 9/9/9 (a cool reference to "Revolution #9") all of The Beatles albums are being re-released on CD in both stereo and mono. This is significant because these CDs are all newly remastered and should sound better than ever before. It's also significant because this is the first time that the original mono mixes of The Beatles albums are being released on CD.

The stereo albums will be available both for individual sale (they will be the new standard Beatles CDs) and as part of The Beatles Stereo Box Set. This box set will include a remastered stereo mix of every single song The Beatles officially released from 1962 through 1970!

The mono mixes will not be available for individual, but only as a part of the special limited edition Beatles Mono CD Box Set. This set includes all 10 of The Beatles albums which were originally mixed in mono (that's 1962's Please Please Me through 1968's self titled double album which is best known as The White Album.) It does not include their final three albums (Yellow Submarine, Let It Be, & Abbey Road) because those albums were never mixed in mono in the first place. Like the stereo mixes, the mono mixes are also newly remastered and they should sound fantastic.

I think the new remasters will sell pretty well. It's about time. Most bands have had their back catalogs remastered at least once since the 80s. The original Beatles CDs sound thin by today's standards and I'm sure the new ones will sound better.
They already released remasters of the Beatles early U.S. LPs on the box sets in 2004 and 2006 and those sound excellent.

Of course they will sell. The Beatles will never get old and there will always be some fan buying their albums.

I don't have a lot of Beatles stuff personally which includes The Beatles 1967-1970 Blue Album, Past Masters Vol 2 & The Capital Albums Vol 1 - which includes all their albums from 1963 & 1964 which are featured in Mono and Stereo. So I may personally get some of their Remastered stuff, I'm not wild about having all their albums though. Unless someone can give me a good reason why it's essentual to have them all.

I guess burning question for me is how well would those remastered albums sound compared to the original vinyls which would have had decent mastertapes at the time. The Beatles is an extremely popular group and if the original Mastertapes weren't preserved through Backup Mastertapes (and by this I don't mean inferior backup tapes which makes albums like The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed sound like what they are today!) then I'm afraid it's not worth the expense going out and buying something when it's not using the original tapes. I just hope for their sake backup was maintained cause those original tapes have probably seen better days.
