I always preferred Rod Evans in Captain Beyond and think his voice was a better fit for that band. Not a great vocalist, but a good one.

Some bands have debut/early albums that in no way have their signature sound locked in yet.
Scorpions-Lonesome Crow and Doobie Brothers-S/T always spring to my mind.
Sometimes those albums are for ardent collectors only.
Love Rod Evans in 'Captain Beyond'.....still play that at least once a month....havent played a DP lp for quite a while. I find their music ok most of the time except for Child In Time , Fools, and a few other oddball things where they go beyond just hard rock and those are interesting.

The first Warhorse is a cool prog hard rock gem.....like a cross between Uriah Heep and DP.
Sadly imho the second lp was not as good or interesting but still has a few good proggy hard rock tracks.
I'm a fan of these more obscure proggy things so they appeal to me but most people prefer the straight ahead rock of the mainstream groups.
I like the second Warhorse album especially the title track Red Sea which sounds very Deep Purple circa 1970 and according to Nick Simper ex Deep Purple and bass player in the Mk.1 version he claims Ritchie Blackmore rang him up and said that he liked the track Red Sea!.

Also the opening track Chasing Shadows is a fairly song opening track which is a quite fast opener which is memorable and also Lalena a Donavan song done as a slow track works nicely (for me) which the British rock band Uriah Heep covered on their first album in 1970.

Sorry dudes it was Uriah Heep that covered the Donavan song Lalena (as well as Deep Purple) arpearing on 'the Heeps' debut album Very Eavy, Very Umble in 1970 my mistake although I have change it now ;)

I must admit that I prefer Fireball over In Rock which is possibly enough to receive death threats from some dudes (joking guys I hope?) and I personally like all the tracks on Fireball although Anyone's Daughter isn't a particular track that I like much but tracks like Fireball, No No No & Fools and even The Mule all sound good to my ears. I have read in the past that even though 'The man in black' Mr. Blackmore doesn't rate Fireball he has said in the past that he liked Fireball, No No No & Fools on the album.

Ian Gillan thinks Fireball was a very 'progressive album' and Jon Lord said it was ok but Blackmore, Glover & Paice didn't like it much with the album falling between two very good albums In Rock & Machine Head

^There is a German prog rock band called 'Anyones Daughter' that took their name from that track on Fireball. The Geman band started out covering old Deep Purple material.
