A personal favorite of mine Yoshiki, the primary songwriter for X Japan (as well as his numerous other projects).

There are not a lot of people out there that write hard hitting rock songs like Yoshiki and still (very easily) pull off some of the more tremendous of ballads.

First two driving rock songs (which he is the sole songwriter for)...

And then a ballad (which he is also the sole songwriter for)...

I very much agree with this. Yoshiki writes some fantastic songs!
Not only that, he is very talented on the drums and piano!

There is a fledgling on-line campaign to get Willie Dixon into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Among the supporters are Bernie Taupin (of Elton John fame) and Dr. Barry's Travellin' Medicine and Blues Show (terrestrial radio).

Info available at Willie Dixon for Song Writers Hall of fame

Given Willie Dixon's massive influence on blues and on rock, it's about time he gets the credit he deserves.

How About A Beatle?

I know Lennon/McCartney would be the obvious way to go, but I have always been a George guy. Some of my favorite Harrisongs (as a Beatle and solo) include:

Don't Bother Me
I Need You
Think For Yourself
If I Needed Someone
Taxman
I Want To Tell You
Within You Without You
Long Long Long
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Only A Northern Song
It's All Too Much
Old Brown Shoe
Something
Here Comes The Sun
I Me Mine
Beware Of Darkness
Isn't it A Pity
All Things Must Pass
Art Of Dying
Bangla Desh
Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)
Sue Me Sue You Blues
Living in The Material World
Dark Horse
You
This Song
Blow Away
Not Guilty
That's the Way It Goes
When We Was Fab
Any Road
Brainwashed
