Wang Dang Doodle. Willie Dixon wrote this song in 1951/52. He gave it to Howlin' Wolf. The Wolf recorded it in 1960.

Livin' Blues recorded/covered the song:

PJ Harvey in 1993:

Good, I'm glad I got this thread, because I've got a good one.

The original isn't straight blues, or straight jazz, but there's a bit of both in there.

Tiny Bradshaw, 1951

Johnny Burnette & The Rock And Roll Trio, 1956

The Yardbirds, 1965. The first clear sign of 'the crossover'

Zep, 1969. Rough sound, but what do ya expect with a bootleg from the 60s?

Aero, 1974

This cut by Foghat, called Honey Hush (1977), has different lyrics, but there's no doubt what song it is.

I hope people will listen to all these cuts, because they're all great.

Budgie's version of Baby, Please Don't Go is one of their best tracks from one of their best albums (Never Turn Your Back On a Friend):

I've always assumed Budgie were influenced by Them:

Howlin' Wolf's Killing Floor.

Hendrix, a killer, at Monterey.

I don't think the Stones' raucous cover of Muddy Waters' I Just Want to Make Love to You has been mentioned.

I think the first recording of House of the Rising Sun was a field recording by Alan Lomax of a teenager whose name escapes me, ahead of recordings by Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Dylan and others - all prior to the classic by The Animals.
