I know this is an old thread but I just found this video from Al's heyday and thought I would share, it is really good. I've been a fan since the late 70's.

Here is some more recent video showing some of Al's electric work

^^Have you listened to his acoustic tribute to the Beatles "All Your Life" GG?

Quite a fascinating project, he recorded it using the same equipment the Beatles did back in the 60's in the same studio.

Other than the stray single here and there, this is the only cd I own from this genre.

A guy I was stationed Germany with had it. It's pretty freakin' cool, but my interest never really got any further than this.

I guess, because I had a good set of headphones and had just done up a chunk of hashish, my listening pleasure had nowhere to go but down after that. :D

@Vehicle

The "Friday Night in San Francisco" is a great album and one of his most popular, however that is his acoustic side. Check out some of his electric guitar work. He got his start (in the business) with electric and he really shined. He only kind of gave it up due to hearing problems. He has recently made sort of a comeback to electric. His first several albums featured electric and are fantastic with the first three as being my favorites.

Land of the Midnight Sun (1976)
Elegant Gypsy (1977)
Casino (1978)
Splendido Hotel (1980)
Electric Rendezvous (1982)
Scenario (1983)

Al's a Jersey boy like me!
Been a fan since the 70's and his guitar work in Return To Forever. I've also got his classic three albums:
Land of the Midnight Sun (1976)
Elegant Gypsy (1977)
Casino (1978)

I always thought he was a bit sloppy for a jazzy guitarist but that was something I like about him. I saw Al a few times:

1978- Central Park warmup act was UK(Wetton, Holdsworth, Jobson and Bruford)
1980-McLaughlin, DiMeola & DeLucia at Carnegie Hall (Amazing show-although Paco and McLaughlin blow Al away)
1983-Return To Forever in Elizabeth NJ
2008-Return To Forever, Bronx

Al Di Meola, along with Stevie Winwood, Micheal Schrive, Klause Schultz appeared on Stomu Yamashita's Go Projects. There where two studio albums Go (1976), Go II (1977) and also Go Live From Paris (1976). In 2010(not sure on the date) there was a Go box set released on CD, that contained all three of these recordings.

That's funny, I've always thought the opposite. He's very proficient to say the least, especially on his "Flamenco" style playing. You dont get to be a great "Flamenco" guitarist and play with the likes of John McLaughlin and play sloppy. I guess it is a matter of opinion. What do you mean by sloppy?
