Gonna stick me neck out here and tip my hat to this top bass player, now in his 80's. Played on just about everything and anything, was a member of Sky, Blue Mink, T. Rex and Edwards Hand... to name but a few.
He toured with David Bowie, played on Man of Words and Space Oddity, gave Elton John a digout on Tumbleweed Connection, featured on Dandy In The Underworld and sessioned with David Essex - Harry Nilsson- Al Kooper and The Hollies, his early job aboard the QE2 liner as an orchestra bassist introduced him to electric bass proper.. New York style. from his frequent visits.
He played Tuba and can stand on the rostrum along with John Entwistle and John Paul Jones.... take a bow Herbie Flowers. ( "can you kick it?") Herbs class bass intro-

Ok.. Just one right off that you would probably NOT consider a great guitarist, But listening to a Ohio Player LP one day I heard, Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner
Do a nice little bluesy jam that impressed me..

If you have time give it a listen. It's a long song but somewhere in the middle you hear a little SRV style coming out. Or fast forward to 5:09

My all-time favourite bass player - Gary Thain of Keef Hartley Band and the classic Uriah Heep line-up.
Uriah Heep - Sweet Lorraine - a bass masterpiece
