I don't think I have ever experienced -30C. The southern coast of England has a mild climate and turns us southerners into softies. I thought it was bad here, last night, but footage of the West Country (Porthleven in Cornwall) on TV has shown the gales to be horrendous, creating a vortex in...

    Lou Gramm vs. Foreigner

My feeling is Foreigner suffered with the loss of Ian McDonald. The band were okay immediately afterwards, but with subsequent lineup changes they went into decline and became repetitive and dull (despite great musicians). It is one thing finding a similar singer, but it is another to recapture...

    Strip 'em --- One-Hit Wonders {closed}

^ I'm glad to see UB40 go, they had around 50 or 60 hit singles.

    Blue Oyster Cult (Official Thread)

The first BOC I heard was Buck's Boogie from On Your Feet or On Your Knees, then I bought Agents of Fortune. The latter is still one of my favourite albums. I have a vague memory of hearing Soft White Underbelly or Stalk Forest on Radio Luxembourg, while under the sheets, but the reception was...

    Jethro Tull (Official Thread)

That looks serious, I hope he is okay. I was recently listening to A Musical Evening With The Mick Abrahams Band and it reminded me of how good he was/is. I always liked the first two Blodwyn Pig albums, especially Getting to This and See My Way. He formed a band called This Was, with an album...

    Jethro Tull (Official Thread)

I cannot remember what the situation is with Abrahams. I would settle for the return of Eddie Jobson, as he promises much and releases little. I noticed on the Tull site that Opahle (if that is how you spell it) was born in 1983, which is after the classic Tull era. He has worked with Greg...

    Jethro Tull (Official Thread)

I have found their albums disappointing since 'A', although I liked Anderson's Walk into Light. With Martin Barre gone, it would have been a good opportunity to reunite with Abrahams, Cornick and Bunker.

^ I always thought this album was as good, if not better, than Ziggy Stardust.

Black Sabbath - Born Again (rate this album)

Having just voted in the similar Saxon thread, the criteria needs a category between good and great. I voted great as this is better than good, but it isn't great by Sabbath and Gillan's standards. Zero the Hero is certainly a great track, while Trashed, Disturbing the Priest, Hot Line and Keep...

    The King of Progressive Metal.

Dream Theater, closely followed by Shadow Gallery, although I have never thought of either as progessive metal. I voted for DT because I like them, but purists would probably go for POS or Riverside as prime exponents(?) Fates Warnng seem pretty good, but I have never heard Opeth in my life!

    Wheels Of Steel

I gave it 6 for being a good album, although 747 (Strangers in the Night) is close to being a great track. The problem I have with Saxon is that they are too derivative. The spin-off Oliver-Dawson band, to their credit, tried to move away from predictabilty, but their singers did not fit. On a...

    Your favorite NEW Rock bands

I cannot get into new bands and those I do like have already been mentioned (Electric Mary, Graveyard, Astra, Beardfish), with the exception of Pride Tiger. I discover things that are new to me, like Fates Warning, Trent Gardner's projects and James LaBrie's solo albums, but they are probably...

Concept Albums: Does Anyone Care About The Concept?

No. Both were mentioned on the first page. I'll add the first rock concept album, The Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow. It definitely influenced Pete Townshend's Tommy and the biographical story was copied by Roger Waters for The Wall. It is a psychedelic, but coherent narrative concept.

Although they weren't bad without him, I preferred Foreigner with Ian McDonald. Same with King Crimson!

    Forgotten Bands of the Sixties

The Searchers' jangly guitars influenced The Byrds and therefore many other bands.
