"Reelin' in the Years" is a great song, but SD has done a great body of work and I will always enjoy playing their music.

Re: Let's Talk About Steely Dan!!

Nice to see another Steely Dan fan in the house Squonk, I have everything up to Gaucho, and three of Fagen's solo albums as well, so I guess that qualifies me as a big fan too.
they are my third or fourth favorite band I'd say, depending one what day you ask me
I've only heard one of Fagen's solo albums, "Nightfly" and I liked it a lot, it was sort of an extension of Steely Dan, but more relaxed, I liked it a lot, I still need to get my hands on teh other two
Steely Dan was one of those bands that had some good stuff, but not a whole lot that would stand out to me. Though, "Reelin' In the Years" is a great track, I'll give them that

not a whole lot stand out? come on, listen to a full album and tell me its not beyond any music you've ever heard.... Maybe you just don't like the whole Jazz rock thing, but damn, I can't listen to one album and not be amazed at the musicians and writing

Re: Let's Talk About Steely Dan!!

I saw Steely Dan in Memphis back in August. Good show, but a little short. No "FM," "Pretzel Logic" or "Deacon Blues." With a catalog this deep and this good, they could have easily played more than 2 hours and I'd have still wanted more!

I have to say after listening to the links and finding that I knew Reeling In The Years and Do It Again that I'd be lying if I said I liked these guys. They kind of make me sleepy. Just not my style. Sorry! Any amazing songs that might change my mind a little or is it a you either get it or don't type of band!

If you don't like the jazz influenced rock and amazing instrumentation then you just won't like SD, S&S.

Before you close the door on them completely, pick up a copy of Countdown to Ecstasy and play it a few times, if you still don't enjoy their sound, then you simply don't like them.

I really enjoy these guys, because they stretch the boundaries and the jazz influence is palpable in almost everything they ever recorded, the most accessible album would be "Can't Buy A Thrill", I have partied to that one more times that I can count.:D

^^Did they have a warm-up band Joey Self? If not I agree with you, giving your fans 3+ hours of entertainment especially with a catalog as extensive as SD's should be the standard, not the exception.

The Arkells and then Kathleen Edwards opened for the Tragically Hip this summer ... The "Hip" were on for over two hours and played all of their hits ... It's rare for a group not to have an opening act ... Even the "indie" groups that I've seen have opening acts.

I would image that Steely Dan does have someone opening for them.

When I saw Yes, Jethro Tull and Supertramp they all played with no warm-up band and over 3 hours. I realize this hurts new up and coming bands, but when a band is at the peak of their popularity I love them doing a long set. Bruce Springsteen is another artist legendary for doing a great concert usually over 3 hours long.

hehe, not a thing wrong with that...
CTE is probably my favorite album if I had to chose one, but Aja is a close second then maybe Pretzel Logic, and Can't buy a thrill will fit in there somewhere
