EMI selling Abbey Road Studio

I don't want to turn this thread into and "is downloading wrong?" thread....
but how would downloading directly effect this studio(or any studio)?

I know home recording has effected professional studios greatly, and because it is more accessible there are more studios that need the money to be spread to, but I fail to see how downloading effects a studio......

I agree, I said it didn't Selling the studio is all about the huge debt owed by the evil corporation that now happens to own the Apple studios. As far as I know the studio is being used quite a bit.

The news report on BBC I watched last night said the studio was not being used to it's capacity anymore. That's not to say that no one is recording but it's not being booked to capacity.

Downloading and Home Recording are two of the reasons they mentioned on the broadcast, and if you think about it the whole Digital age has had an effect on recording and distribution of music, they are linked.

Flip is right though, the main reason for offering Abbey Road for sale is the Humongous 4 Billion dollar debt EMI is struggling with, their parent company wants to divest as many assets as possible to reduce the debt load.

This story was posted in my newspaper today, so Abbey Road is officially on the block.

It also still attracts thousands of tourists to get their picture taken walking across the street. It is more than just a recording studio, part of the firmament of the musical legacy of the 60's up until the present.

x2. Sad that it may become just a piece of business real estate. Abbey Road has become the "Graceland" of London.

The studio was recently used to make two major motion picture soundtracks and is the only studio in the area large enough to hold a full orchestra. It has plenty of potential. The real issue is how fast the investment can be recovered. McCartney would do well to buy it and immediately bring in some of his musical friends to put out material to get the studio back into the forefront. Careful selection of clients will reduce the risk of financial losses.

I totally agree with this. It really should be possible to turn a profit on the studios. 'Real' bands will always use 'real' studios no matter what. I know that more and more bands and artists use home studios but I don't see a future - in my li'l crystal ball - that says that a majority of bands will record at home.

The return of vinyl in recent years could also signal a turn away from modern, clean, digital sound - people want the warmth back in music. At least those who actually care enough about music to not use their phone as their primary audio source.

And yeah, I'm aware that 'warmth' is available in home studios at the click of a button BUT STILL!

I love my ipod as I can listen to music anywhere and what I want, however I need to have the actual CD so that I can play at home too. It is a great shame that they have to put the studio up for sale to pay their debt!!! stop paying the executives vast sums of money then..

Whoever buys it should turn it into a museum or something if it doesn't survive as a studio, if you ask me. Not only the Beatles, but also Pink Floyd, Radiohead and U2, among many others, have recorded there. Millions would pay a pretty penny to go there and see it, maybe with some memorabilia there like instruments and equipment used by the big names and rare photographs and the like. Would be just as profitable as any car-park. But, at the end of the day, more people will go just to see the damned zebra crossing than the studio itself, so who knows really....

The debt load for EMI is $4 billion. They will need to do more than walk tour groups through it unless they charge $4,000 a head for the first million visitors. And that doesn't include the new costs of operations. They need to make music there.
