I saw something on TV last week about the "tragic life and death of George Michael" while working on some things in the house. That wasn't the name of the show, but that was the basic theme. I can't tell you how many times I rolled my eyes while watching it. They started with the days in Wham, to his first solo album and how hugely popular he was. Then went into some long preachy couple of segments about his "bravery" for coming out of the closet and doing it on his own terms. ALl I could think was "he got caught soliciting sex from a male cop in a public restroom", and after the smoke cleared.... THEN he came out. Is that "brave"? Or is it more of a "duh" moment that gets over-sensationalized.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about his likes and dislikes in the bedroom. The guy COULD sing and did well at it. He had a voice. I would put Faith as one one of the best pop albums of the 1980's, easily.

Anyway, then after hashing and rehashing his sexuality on this show, then they went into his downfall after downfall, problems with drugs, drinking and driving, possession charges, etc etc. Of course, the show ends with the "tragic" ending of his life, playing the 911 call from his roommate/lover on Christmas day, etc. To this I rolled my eyes again.

I'm sorry.... my definition of a "tragic death" would be Stevie Ray Vaughan dying in a helicopter crash. Lennon and/or Dimebag being shot by crazed, nutjob fans. The Lynyrd Skynyrd members, Randy Rhodes, Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, etc dying in plane crashes, etc. THOSE deaths are tragic. Kurt Cobain deep-throating a shotgun isn't tragic. Jimi Hendrix, John Bonham, Bon Scott, Janis Joplin, Keith Moon, Phil Lynott, Kevin DuBrow, Jani Lane ... and many many more (including George Michael) all died due to poor lifestyle choices ... choices that they made themselves.... I just don't find that tragic. Unfortunate? Yes. Sad? Sure. Tragic? Not by my definition.

While the official cause of death for George was not overdose, the guy struggled with drug and alcohol use and from what I have seen and read, that was a major contributing factor to the organ failure that he had.


Sorry to go on a rant, just figured I'd share my calloused opinion while it's still fresh in my mind.
