Skynyrd's Innyrds has "outtake" versions of Double Trouble & Free Bird. There could be an alternate version of Simple Man somewhere.

The song is on at least 3 live albums from the latter day version of the band and one from the original lineup.

Try checking out those versions on youtube. Might just be a well recorded live version that doesn't "sound" live.

There is an alternative version of "Simple Man" on the reissue of "Skynyrd's First and... Last", repackaged as "Skynyrd's First: The Complete Muscle Shoals Album". It's a bit shorter and there are differences between that one and the studio version on "(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)", but it's not "more rocking" (although you could argue the production makes it sound heavier).

I cannot recall any other studio versions, off the top of my head, but I have tons of Skynyrd compilations with alternative versions, demos and outtakes. I'll have to look through those to see if there's another version of "Simple Man".

I also have a bootleg of a show they did in 2004, playing all of "(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)" live in a radio studio. There's no crowd and the tracks could easily be mistaken for a studio versions. However, even that version of "Simple Man" (Despite the modern and naturally heavier sounding guitars) is not a rockier version.

My best bet is that you've heard a cover version, or as @Ar-Pharazon said, a live version that just doesn't sound live (like the one mentioned above).

Remembering Billy today...

The improvisation at the beginning of this video gives me goose bumps every time:

Here's a great track from Vision (with Billy):

And Billy with The Bobaloos (Glenn Hughes on vocals!):

He may not have been as known as his cousins, but Jimmie has released some excellent albums. For a while, I actually thought he might beat that damn cancer, but unfortunately he didn't. R.I.P. Jimmie.
