I have to go with Lynyrd Skynyrd. They definitely defined what it meant to be "Southern Rock". A bit of trivia........did you know Sweet Home Alabama is a reply to Neil Young's "Alabama", which spoke poorly of the southern state.

Don't get me wrong, I really love ZZ Top as well. Billy Gibbons is one of my favorite guitarists. What most people don't realize is how "mechanical" a lot of ZZ Top's music was. Frank Beard is definitely a very capable drummer, but for some odd reason a lot of his parts are done by a drum machine.

I nearly went Lynyrd based on having less shitty albums like ZZ Top did. Some of ZZ Top stuff was too bland and synthesised for my liking especially in the 80s. But I went ZZ Top because my favourite albums of theirs still slightly edge out the best of Skynyrd for me.

What the hell are you talking about? None of them have shitty albums! :D:oyea:

Not even XXX OR Recycler? Those 2 were pretty crappy......and you can add Antenna to the heap, too. Otherwise, I'm good to go with ZZ T.

Pre '1977......,Skynyrd was perfection...

Honestly, I like all three, not just because I'm a ZZ Top fanboy. :oyea: That said, none of them are among my favourite ZZ Top albums. :D

Nothing beats classic Skynyrd, but the post-crash lineup(s) has released top notch albums as well.

Afterburner was pretty mediocre too.

I concur, fanboy

Honestly, I don't own any Skynyrd post crash albums so I'm not an authority on their quality. I should probably rectify that.

However, I do have the full ZZ Top discography, including Billy Gibbons' Perfectamundo.........which is a decent album, BTW.
