Imagine you work for the mighty Led Zeppelin in the mid 70s and the record company tells you they don't want a double album (super unlikely given the band we're talking about but please play along). Your job is to edit the album to one disc only.

Which songs do you cut? What order do you present the songs per side?

Below is a list of the songs with run times. Each album side is usually about 20 minutes and they like it when each side is of similar length:

1. "Custard Pie" 4:13
2. "The Rover" 5:37
3. "In My Time of Dying" 11:04
4. "Houses of the Holy" 4:02
5. "Trampled Under Foot" 5:37
6. "Kashmir" 8:32
7. "In the Light" 8:46
8. "Bron-Yr-Aur" 2:06
9. "Down by the Seaside" 5:13
10. "Ten Years Gone" 6:32
11. "Night Flight" 3:36
12. "The Wanton Song" 4:10
13. "Boogie with Stu" 3:53
14. "Black Country Woman" 4:24
15. "Sick Again" 4:42

You can just basically nix all of side 1 and 2 aside from "Trampled Under Foot" and "In My Time of Dying" and I'd be happy. The tracklist can stay in the standard order beyond that and I'd be as ripe as a peach. :)

Really? No Kashmir?

I agree the first disc is weak and so glad you agree about In My Time of Dying being a definite keeper but no Kashmir?

Hard for me to choose which songs to cut because I love all the tracks but I'd get rid of Kashmir, In My Light, Night Flight if I had to condense it to one album.

You could cut these songs
Custard Pie
The Rover
In My Time of Dying
Houses of the Holy
Trampled Under Foot
Kashmir
In the Light
Bron-Yr-Aur
Down by the Seaside
Ten Years Gone
Night Flight
The Wanton Song
Boogie with Stu
Black Country Woman
Sick Again

And release ''In My Time of Dying'' as a single with ''Kashmir'' as the B-Side/bonus track.

Those three are among my favorites. I especially like In The Light. I think JPJ is brilliant on that track and just really dig the whole feel.

This is pretty interesting. Strange how different music is perceived from person to person.

A good deal of those tunes are among my favorites. Every time I hear The Wanton Song (for instance) it's like I drank a gallon of the best energy drink there is...

Nope. The melody is good and I like the riff but I think it's about 3 or 4 minutes too long. It's so bloated that I almost never can sit and listen to it the whole way through.

It is a long song but for me the different movements and nuances save it. The middle part provides break enough for me but to each his own.

Yeah, it always comes down to tastes but I do love long songs so it's not the length that flubs "Kashmr" for me. ("In My Time of Dying" being my favorite Zeppelin song should prove that well enough) I just feel like it plods around in too much of a circle as opposed to...."Bat Out of Hell" or "Bohemian Rhapsody" or even "Stairway..." for that matter have a much stronger feeling of progression and climax to my ear.
