BTW, I've never officially updated her singles or this thread as I should've. I don't do the specific artist/band thread anymore. I've posted Heart, Heart, Head but not the official video and I have "Desire" in my profile but never in the actual artist thread. So for prosperity and for my upcoming occasion here is more Meg perfection:

Going to add a couple post! Adding this addition from my 2013 best song insert as not everyone sifts through longer list of new music and how much more of a tribute can one give to an artist. it's be silly not to add this to the official thread!

Heart Heart Head

This song could top my whole 2013. The full EP that got released in 2014 already has top reign. With the exception of ONE other song this year there was no song I repeatedly play as much as this one. It's so good that I've kept putting this entry off because I've spent so much time in my travels online and in my own life trying to not only expose the world to this song but to Meg herself. I'd say almost everyone that I've posted Meg for or just happened to play her for in my car just got it and usually in most cases this was the first song I'd heard. I'd post it on facebook and others would ask me or comment about it later if they hadn't already during that first post. In this song in particular I would had parties willingly scream as loud as they could during the part when Meg finally let's go.

For once, I get to ramble about someone that crosses that gap to where there's something that we all get about an artist. That combination between accessibility, emotional resonance and artistic merit is usually what creates the larger than life artist. Now considering I open this up and say that a good portion of that fanbase I know has jumped on since the first EP so I'm not just riding off of this one song. Not at all! :D It was "Monster" and Curbstomp" prior that had people intrigued by this musical curiosity and sated and intrigued them enough to get the "Daughter In The Choir" EP. After "Heart, Heart, Head" there's "Desire" to lure you to the second perfect EP "Make A Shadow".

When one first hears and sees Meg there's something fiery, raw, vulnerable, operatic and beautifully off about her. There's nothing like her right now. Other chicks may scream (ie Maria Brink) and others may play rock (Hayley, Lizzy Storm) and Hell others are even amazing guitar virtuosos (Orianthi) but nobody channels the aggression and spirit of rock more than Meg. Think Fiona Apple if she actually used the vocal range that fits her feisty verbiage. Think of the rock stars where they knew there persona and everything they wanted to convey right down to what they project to the audience's ears but what they want the audience to see. No other female artist has a vision behind their sound either. You watch Meg in video or especially live (there's nothing like it) and you know that you are being taken in to a shared experience. Very rarely does the actions of the puppet masters theatricality feel so open and raw. Now's the time! The fact that Meg has joined a major label now prepping for her first album may just stoke the embers of this heatseeking fireball of a talent.

Now to the song specifically! I was already a Meg Myers fan so the second I found out I listened to the stream that she put up on Soundcloud! No video or visual to act out the emotion here and I was simply blown away! It is the quickest I was ever drawn into a Meg song and it's created brilliantly so that you intuitively get drawn into it's dramatic web. Now the first time I heard it I had NO idea about the climax. I just listened to the hypnotic slow keys of what sounds like a funeral dirge until Kens violin comes in and puts you in a trance like a snake. Megs vocal from the start keeps you off balance because it's that weird place as it's in that scary place between restrained and unhinged. When that reaches that carnal, unhinged spot it's a build and climax that has no unmatched perfection since The Smashing Pumpkins imo.

There's no mystery or ambiguity here. You know from the start lyrically that this is the song of a jilted lover in that solitary place. There's that feeling from the start that Meg could jokingly be that girl that's great until you break her heart. The crazy, great looking chick that will try to obsessively make your life Hell and still yearn for you at the same time never letting go. Then there's the honest little talked about place where we could all relate to this. You don't have to be that drama King or Queen who post their sadness all over Facebook to relate to this. You don't have to be that crazy stalker. When we reach that heartbreak where you are on the other end and realize that piece of something you valued is not coming back and you have no control over it this sort of breakdown happens internally to different degrees. Sadness builds, turns to building anger, on comes the climax, feelings expulsed, breathing turns to calm and a silent peace takes over.

Why has such a simple arc never been built around this before in the long history of love and heartbreak in music. It's more than just about talent and creativity? This song is about something that's missing in music. Bravery! Meg is not only brave artistically in a music world where we have a threshold for art crossing that line into uncomfortable emotions but she's also brave in her honesty around sexuality. Megs take on sexuality is not the typical sex appeal. It's darkness and honest depiction of a healthy but little talked about healthy female sexual appetite is more open to judgment than any twerking pop star. Meg has opened up the door not to gathering male fans due to her sexuality but to being slagged with the unfair psycho chick and whore banners. It's a door I haven't seen opened since Fiona Apple's "Criminal". It doesn't dominate every song and is opened up more in others but in "Heart Heart Head" on top of the emotional sorrow she includes the missing intimacy and of pleasure from her specific partner. When has that happened prior? It's just one more reason Meg is special. She brings humanity and the missing roundtable components on an experience unfiltered. After a breakup you miss and crave for that emotional, spiritual, familiar and sexual space back. All in all, this is the best widest scoped, brilliantly crafted arc and all, emotionally resonant breakup song ever imo.

To end this it all came together when two friends and I embarked on one of my best concert experiences ever! When I drove down to Mass with two friends the communal experience and bond to start with with a new artist was a magical thing. Meg Was only one of three acts, wedged in the middle, but she was our secret. We were all initiated singing her catalog of songs not because they were driven into our head but because we CHOSE to let them be in our heads on our own time. When I got there and Meg took the stage I was physically, vocally and emotionally 100% involved in every song. When "Heart Heart Head" came on though I was more lost in a concert experience than I was even with my favorite band, The Smashing Pumpkins. Even when hearing the song again from the beginning you sing along and you have this awesome nervous energy. Then it scales up and you feel that aggressive anxiety. Maybe giddy is a better word as it's a great feeling welling up inside. Then you get to that point and you lose it. Not possibly as beautifully unhinged as Meg as she howls, eyes darting out, teeth bared, hands open palmed out at each side shaking, leg stomping in a tantrum, body convulsing, until she practically curls up in a ball down to her knees and you hear every part of her internally sound raising up like sandpaper through her vocal chords. Her screams tell their own story as there are wavelengths, different levels and notes during the breakdown. Being there in front stage it was one of the loudest things I've heard and piercing to the ears but at the same time peaceful! It was internally a life changing experience! How much more can be said after that! This song will be followed by three top albums for 2013 but as far as a single piece of music this WAS my 2013! :grinthumb

Now for a new song update:

Another great track of off the flawless EP. Meg is like if you put a hybrid of everything raw that's missing from music. You miss female angst such as Hole, Fiona Apple, etc. then Meg has it. You miss artist who integrate guitar solos and a hard rock edge then Meg has it. You miss artist that add elegant violins and have a dramatic flair then Meg has it. You miss music that unabashedly bare and confessional then Meg brings it. You like your artist to be open to modern flourishes but try to advance it then Meg does that by embracing and integrating an electronic element when necessary. Megs latest addition to her arsenal is adding a track that's as punk as she's ever been. Great stuff! :D
