50 years ago, James Carroll at WWDC in Washington, DC, became the first disc jockey to broadcast a Beatles record on American radio. Carroll played 'I Want To Hold Your Hand', which he had obtained from his stewardess girlfriend, who brought the single back from the UK. Due to listener demand, the song was played daily, every hour. Since it hadn't been released yet in the States, Capitol Records initially considered court action, but instead released the single earlier than planned.

Beatles rare album sells for $175,000

A rare first pressing of Beatles classic Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has sold at auction for $175,698.

The mono edition of the 1967 album was signed by all four members of the Fab Four at a hotel in England.

Sellers RR Auction, who’d set a reserve of $10,000, say the record was taken into the Atlantic Hotel, Newquay in September that year by a young porter who worked there.

In a letter written in 1985 he explained: “To my and everybody’s amazement, the Beatles stayed at the Atlantic for a few days while they were filming Magical Mystery Tour. The manager told all the staff who worked at the hotel not to bother or ask them for their autographs.

“I thought it was a good idea to take something back and have it signed. I sneaked the album into work up my top as I didn’t want the manager to see. The Beatles didn’t seem to mind anyway, as they signed a few items for staff and guests. I remember having to get George’s at a later day, as he wasn’t present when Paul, Ringo, and John signed.”

Expert Frank Caiazzo, who authenticated the signatures, said: “Fully autographed Sgt Pepper LP covers are quite rare and considered by many collector’s to be the holy grail of signed rock and roll albums.”

It Was 50 Years Ago Today

On February 7th, 1964, The Beatles landed at JFK Airport for their first visit to America. Two days later they made their historic first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show". Their first Capitol single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" B/W "I Saw Her Standing There" was sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Life as we know it begins here.

In Case You Missed It

On Sunday night, 50 years to the day, CBS had a two and a half hour tribute to The Beatles commemorating their historic first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. It was pretty darned good. If you didn't catch it (or want to catch it again) CBS is re-running the show tomorrow night, February 12th, at 8:30 PM.

A patently absurd response. The concept was to to celebrate the coming to America of an entertainment phenomenon that would eventually alter the course of human cultural history. One Direction is all good and fine, but they belong on the Grammys,SNL,or a daytime talk show like "Today" that has major current musical guest performers. The whole "who cares, One Direction" is way bigger" thing completely undermines the significance of the Beatles first Ed Sullivan appearance a half century ago.And besides, maybe bigger on the current BIllboard charts, but in general historical light of things,One Direction will never be worthy of licking Paul McCartney's boots clean.GIve me a break and get yourself a frigen clue. You are apparently shallow and narrow minded and statements like that should have you banned from this site!

I'm sure Vehicle was just being very sarcastic and having a joke after the statement one of the One Direction whippersnappers came out with the other day saying they are bigger than The Beatles.

This whole thing is a bit of a joke really. Maybe you guys in the US and other parts of the world would not be aware of how the One Direction boys came together. They were all separate acts in the 'X Factor' in the UK. Someone (I think Cowell) suggested putting them all together, as they were utterly useless alone. They didn't even win the competition, but we all know what happened afterwards. Simon Cowell now has a complete stranglehold on the pop business, with a few exceptions. This stuff about being 'bigger than The Beatles' is all great publicity, which would have been generated by Cowell (or his people).
