There's always a danger in judging something too quickly, especially when you've been anticipating an album for this long.

However, what won't change here is the ballads vs rockers quota. It seems they've gone for "let's go platinum" rather than "let's kick everyone's ass" The Diane Warren ballad "We All Fall Down" is a case in point. And the Carrie Underwood duet, which for those who don't want to spoil it by listening to the stream is, I shit you not, a country song, will have first era Aerosmith fans and those who rejoined the party up to Pump smashing their CD discs off the wall.

Given the saleability of those ballads and Tyler's celebrity status these days, this will sell a lot more than Van Halen's A Different Kind Of Truth (the comparable comeback release this year, I guess), but again on first impression, the Halen album kicks seven dozes of shit outta the Aerosmith album.

The opening track "Luv XXX" is a pretty average first track for me. Sounds like a Cheap Trick B-side and doesn't rock nearly hard enough for a band of this stature and reputation, opening their account after such a long lay off.

It's not all bad news, "Oh Yeah", "Beautiful" and "Street Jesus" are genuinely great Aerosmith tracks. And The song quality generally is way better than Just Push Play.

Tyler's vocals are shot, but given the man's age we can hardly complain at that.

A bit of a ho-hum for me then, but let's wait for the product and let it bed in a little before we declare anything too finalised.

I like their ballads so I am still interested in this album.

I like their ballads to but...enough is enough. Some of these are good some aren't,there should have been 2 not seven.

I am usually sceptical when an album has many ballads but I would have been more annoyed had the entire album been ballads. lol
I hate when bands do entire albums of ballads.

We're not talking about Boys II Men or Maroon 5, Aerosmith are supposed to be a dirty assed guitar rock n roll band, not a pop or R&B band. The balance is twisted to ridiculous proportions from first listen.

Anything more than 3 -4 ballads is an absolute joke.

As I said earlier though, let's wait for the full product. A few of the ballads have a Beatlesque/ blues feel, so maybe it isn't quite as bad as we're painting.

^^I am patient Coltrane2, I will play an album at least 3 times before trying to form any lasting opinion, but in Aerosmith's case they came out and said this was a return to roots kick ass album, for it to have so many slow songs is going to upset more than one fan.

I will listen to the streaming album tomorrow when I have time, just to get a taste, although I am usually the same as Riff when it comes to this and prefer to wait till I have the CD rather than spoil the anticipation of a new record from a band I follow.

I admire your patience but I just could not wait. The must frustrating thing is, there is some great stuff on there. If it was all terrible I could dismiss it and that would be that. There's a song called "Oh Yeah", which they've been playing live, which is the best thing they've done in over 20 years and sounds like it could have been on The 'Stones Sticky Fingers.

Do stream it as, if you're of a similar opinion to me, you'll save yourself the CD price.

Actually I agree. I've done three listens and it's not a disaster, but unequivocally it's not an album for the classic Aerosmith era fan and what is beyond doubt is that it contains far more ballads than an album purporting to be a rock album can claim to, which in truth makes it a pop album, containing rock tracks. That's fine but the pre-release fanfare suggested otherwise.

There is one deafening thud: I listened to Toys In The Attic directly after the last play and the 1975 release p*ssed all over it in every way possible...and that included a ballad in You See My Crying that is far superior to anything on this release.

As I say, not a disaster, but just an OK pop record. It's ironic that it'll sell by the bucketload, given that it's very clear that Aerosmith is dead as a musical force.

Thanks for the link.
Can only play the song "oh yeah". Not sure where are the rest of the songs. Do you have to register and log-in to listen to the full album?

Hard to make a judgement on the whole album based on a single song. I'll wait till the album gets out..
