Denying that the Spice Girls were/are relevant really shows the one-sided knowledge of people who only pay mind to genres they care for and ignore the rest. The Spice Girls are HUGE over in the UK. In terms of popularity, from what I gather they're like the female Beatles in their home country. Sorry to say this, but a reunion of those ladies would generate far more interest than most of the bands we talk about on here. I'm willing to bet even if Pink Floyd appears, more people will be thrilled to see the Spice Girls, as unfortunate as that is. That doesn't mean that they're any better though, just more recent and pop icons usually have better exposure.

^^^ Actually, you said nothing wrong at all Vehicle. :)

I'm not a fan of the Spice Girls. I was briefly when I was, like... 10. They are very significant overseas though and easily recognized even here in the States.

When Mike Oldfield was playing at the opening ceremony, a person on the BBC 1 commentary, called Trevor Nelson, decided to talk over the music and tell us his favourite this and that. When the rap 'music' began, he was gushing before they performed and reverentially quiet during the act. If The Beatles reformed for the closing ceremony, I assume this individual would discuss his personal preferences over them, until the rap acts appeared.

How popular is rap over there, Big Ears? I've been wondering that myself.

You know, this reminds me of some big thing music event that happened more than 5, but less than 10 years ago.

I forget what the evernt was, but Pink Floyd had reunited for it, and this knucklehead from either MTV or VH1 talked over just about the entired performance, going on and on about how wonderful Floyd was, the musical genius Blah Blah Blah.

Yes, we all know all about Pink Floyd, moron, now it would be awesome if you would shut your here today gone tomorrow wasn't even alive when The Wall came out be on some b-list celebrity rehab show probably before this benefit is over mouth, maybe we could hear it!!

Rap and hip hop are massively popular here, at least among the young. It seemed cliched by say the mid-eighties (hand gestures, track suits, etc) and many of us expected it to fade away - but it didn't. The strange thing is white middle-class kids think they are black gangsta rappers on the streets of New York and speak with affected accents while wearing track suits with designer baseball caps, etc. Another peculiarity is that there is little home grown rap, apart from Dizzy Rascal, as though rhythm based music has to be American to be authentic (which I wouldn't dispute).

Rap is not the only popular genre in the UK, another is boy/girl bands. It started with New Kids On the Block and soon we had Take That followed by Boyzone. The Spice Girls were a female response. A curious aspect of the Spice Girls is that parents disapproved, while children loved them. Even more incredible is that boy/girl bands have achieved what rock bands continually fail to do, and that is to reform and continue to make money.

Indie was popular, of which the Madchester and Britpop bands are a part. In truth, I don't know if this has endured or not.

Since Amy Winehouse became ill, there has been a whole plethora of female singers, with unorthodox phrasing, who were quick to fill a void, and include Duffy, Adele and others. Adele is supposed to be one of the wealthiest British women. Finally, and I'm no expert, there are girl singers who don't wear very much, perform jerky formation dances and shout a lot (I'm not sure of the genre - hip hop or R&B?). R&B these days seems to mean modern soul, instead of the speeded-up blues of my youth.

Ironically, in the light of the Olympic opening ceremony, British heavy/ progressive rock musicians like Mike Oldfield, ELO, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd (who all featured in varying forms) are regarded as dinosaurs here.

Yea, but they still sell over here in America. They already know they're gonna pop a rating, but that's never enough.

So, just how are suits gonna get even more Americans to watch the opening ceremonies?

Include something they'll watch. We want the dinosaur demographic, so we'll put on some dinosaurs.
