hello fellow classic rockers!!!

this is not my first post here, i registered on this site ages ago, but due to the use of various substances and old age, i forgot my username and password to access...anyway just a question to introduce myself:

i'm rather new to The Who and decided to buy their album Who's next....is it a good choice as first album to listen to? I watched Tommy last night and i really liked it (NB: I have a very bad cough and last night i had a bit too much cough syrup...does that have any effect on my opinion?)

anyway, the cd should arrive tomorrow, i'd like to hear what you guys think about it and the who in general

:D love to all

Who's Next is a great album, especially as an intro, because it has a lot of their radio hits. My personel favorites are Tommy and Quadrophenia, both of which are fantastic compositions, the songs flow so well, and are tied in togehther perfectly. If you want a live album that flat out rocks like no other, pick up Live at Leeds. The quality of the recording isn't perfect, but they JAM. It must have really been something to see The Who live back in the day.

P.S. - The first show I ever saw was The Who at Sullivan Stadium (later Foxboro Stadium, home of the Patriots) in July of 1989.

I've been getting into later Who albums lately. It's Hard and Face Dances to be exact. Who's Next is certainly a classic but there's something about Kenny Jones drumming that I like. It's a total contrast from Keith Moon's reckless abandon. So clinical. Eminence Front is a song I never tire of. The way the drums and riff bust in after the keyboard intro. Athena is another great song on that album. Wacky lyrics:

Consumed
There was a beautiful white horse I saw on a dream stage
He had the snake the size of a sewer pipe living in his rib cage
I felt like a pickeled priest who'd been flambe'd
You got me requisitioned blondie

Yeah take another hit Pete   :D

Another Tricky Day from Face Dances is one of my favorite songs. When ever I'm feeling down that song inspires me.

You're absolutely right. Stupidest lyrics I've ever heard.

I'm an OLD Who fan. Grew up listening to their earliest stuff. I'm a fan of the Who when they had Keith Moon. Not too much of a fan of their newer stuff. I remember driving around with my friends, listening to the Who on my 8 track tape player. Ya, that was many moons ago, when the Who were at their best, IMO . . .They didn't seem as popular as the Stones or Hendrix, at the time, but in their own right, they kicked some major ass!! :)

I'm a Who fan of old ever since my big sis got the 'My Generation' album and I saw them beating their instruments to bits on the Smothers Brothers show in the 60's. Who's Next is indeed a good album to start, but you may want to get ahold of Live at Leeds. Its one of the best live jams ever!

Nowadays I have lost alot of respect for the who, especially after the death of John Entwhistle. They have sold out to CSI, and haven't met a commercial they didn't like.

"I watched Tommy last night and i really liked it"

Do you mean the really dreadful film version with Oliver Reed and Ann Margaret? LOL...That must have been some powerful codeine in that cough medicine!!

I've actually watched it a few times and I still cringe.. I guess it's campy fun, but.....nah, it's just awful!

The others have made great suggestions; Quadrophenia, Live at Leeds, etc.

If you want to see and hear a good cross-section of their career, see if you can find a copy of the DVD, "The Kids Are Alright." It's choppy as anything with no rhyme or reason, but gives you a pretty good look at their history prior to Moonie's death.

The Who

I am a great fan of The Who, but have often thought that they should have quit when Keith Moon died. They can still blow most bands off the stage even now. However, without the greatest rhythm section in rock they cannot match the same sort of intensity they had.

What do you think...

Re: The Who

Well, the two albums after Keith Moon's death were ok, so I had no problem with them carrying on as the Who. But now, with the death of John Entwistle, imo, it is no longer the Who. I have no problem with Pete and Roger touring, and making music, but I wish they would bill themselves as Townshend and Daltry, or something along those lines.
