Thanks guys, one never knows when creating a new thread how it will go down, though knowing this place I could have guessed there would be a good take up!

Some great stuff here already, some of which – like the 12 Monkeys, Butterfly Effect, and Relic movies, I had never heard, but they are all superb, at least on the evidence here! And James Horner can do no wrong for me, Legends of the Fall, superb, and as for Avatar, what an amazing grasp he has on orchestral scoring and building great themes.

Kuaizi, you are spot on with everything you said, and I think you are in for a real treat in Chicago, I’ve been to a ‘concert’ performance of some of the LotR music a few years ago at the Kennedy Center in DC, when my wife was with the NSO, and it was just a wonderful evening, I love the way you have picked out excerpts from certain scenes, especially that second one you picked from the conclusion of Return of the King, when Gandalf and Frodo say goodbye to their friends for the last time, and sailed off into the sunset, boy, I never wept so much at a movie as when I first saw that, I was a blubbering idiot!! The score for all three LotR movies was actually played and performed by the London Philharmonic, and recorded at the Abbey Road studios in London, made most famous of course by the Beatles. I don’t think Peter Jackson – who is I believe a huge Beatles fan – could quite believe that the score for one of his movies was being recorded in the most famous studio in the world. Howard Shore will be working on the score for the two forthcoming ‘Hobbit’ movies, so I expect we will get something equally epic.

I especially love Gollum’s Song from The Two Towers, sung by the incredible and unique Emiliana Torrini...have you heard anything more touching?...Gollum was a most misunderstood and sad and maligned character, I am a big defender of Gollum!

LG, I had no idea that the entire LotR soundtracks were released on CD, 10 discs you say? I only have 3 discs with around 70 minutes of music on each, holy cow, somebody bring me my credit card, like, NOW!!!

Here’s a couple more that I really like…to some extent a great movie is made great by its score and soundtrack, it’s actually what you hear as much as what you see that most tugs on your emotions and makes you remember it long afterwards, you take away the music, and it would barely touch your emotions at all. Here’s Harald Kloser’s theme to ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, and John Williams’ wonderful theme to the movie ‘JFK’

Same for me! :grinthumb I make it a point to watch all of these movies once a year (The Extended Editions of course), and certain parts STILL get me. Instead of watching the movies this past year (I usually watch them around thanksgiving), I read the books, including The Hobbit, and I loved those just as much as the movies. One thing I wish was included in the movies, was Tom Bombadil. But I forgive them because the movies are already super duper long hehe

Another movie score I absolutely love, is Tron. Wendy Carlos really nailed the soundtrack to this film, which really added to the ambiance of the film. She is a master of synths, and proves it! Does a great job also of integrating the orchestra with the synths as well.

A few tidbits:

and my favorite from the score:

I think that the Scouring of the Shire would have been much more important to the film. Even though RotK was super long, I still wish they would have included something. Jackson could have easily cut down on some of the other lengthy scenes to include something about this. Completely ignoring this totally changed the ending of the entire series.

^^I was hoping he added something from both the Barrow Downs/Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire myself. I love what he did but felt that he could have easily added some more to the extended cut of the Fellowship....but we can't have everything.

I was surprised that they are doing "The Hobbit" in two parts...definitely financial consideration I think but the story can support a two parter.

I am just glad all the fighting is over now and it's great that Howard Shore is going to do the soundtrack.

Oh I can definitely agree with that! I mean we never got to see Saruman stripped of his power and wandering like a bitter old man. And the hobbits coming back to The Shire and taking it back (now that they are heroes and all), and seeing how Saruman corrupted it while they were gone. It would also have been great to see Saruman's death as described in the book - it was kind of creepy. I think they would have done a fantastic job with it, but I still forgive them because the movies are really stinkin ass good!

You also get a comprehensive booklet and a DVD audio version as well in every edition.

Like everything else this collection is done with tender loving care, and you can tell.
