Re: The Official Van Halen Thread

Oh wow. That's the most shocking thing I've heard on here since Sunny told us that she had never heard of KISS before joining the forum. :heheh:

But you really are in for a treat, Riff. Van Halen (at least with David Lee Roth at the helm) is just straight up, kickass hard rock band that is right up your alley. Eddie's riffing guitar work, Alex's big drum sound (that is largely from him not using the snare all that much), Michael Anthony's competent bass playing and fantastic backing vocal harmonies, and the extravagance and showman ship of David Lee Roth. Truly a band like no other. :grinthumb

I just went through the Van Halen 1 album and it was pure brilliance.
It all just worked for that album.
I had never heard much Kiss either before joining this forum to be fair. :oyea:

Well Van Halen's self titled debut is one of the two albums that I hold as the non negotiable archetypes for hard rock, so I would have to agree that it is quite brilliant. :grinthumb

Well from what I've gathered KISS just never really landed in the land down under like they did in other parts of the world, particularly the states.

It wouldn't say it's as good, no. But to be fair the debut it just that good. "Van Halen II" has a number of great rockers in it's own right though. You get some really cool riffage out of "Bottoms Up" and "You're No Good", basically an acoustic version of "Eruption" in the form of "Spanish Fly", more radio friendly rockers like "Beautiful Girls" and "Dance The Night Away", gnarlier songs like "D.O.A." and "Light Up The Sky", and other great hits.

So final verdict; no it's not as good as their debut but being that I think it's their best album nothing they've done since is. That doesn't mean they haven't put out some outstanding rock and roll since then though. ;)

Good answer actually, Id only have assumed it wouldnt be as good but thats a pointless comparison as I would like to listen to an album on its merits. :)
Most bands do those albums that are impossible to equal let alone surpass.

Cosmic summed it up pretty well, I think. I generally look at the album as being a slightly lesser version of the first, not to take away from an excellent album in its own right.

See what happens over time when I hang around enough metalheads.
When I dont I dont end up listening to enough good music.

That's ok, cause I couldn't tell you 10 metal bands off the top of my head even if I tried. :heheh:
