Re: Introducing The Uninitiated: The Official Ben Folds Thread

The Luckiest is a beautiful tune and Annie Waits is another example for me on how I see him as the modern day Billy Joel. That's a compliment from me as I love Billy Joel.

I really need to up the voltage on adding some Folds to my collection. :grinthumb

It's a tough call but I think "Rockin' The Suburbs" might be my favorite album by Ben.

Ben Folds would follow up his solo debut with a live debut performing Ben Folds Five Hits and Solo Originals! It was a brilliant live album and one I always go back to. Ben knows his songs and can do them frontwards, backwards, sideways, blindfolded, you name it! That's why this album was awesome because he drew so much more out of them using his craft, the audience and his great presence! The album was

Here are two of the best tracks:

Not The Same
(amazing, a wacked out almost spiritual experience)

Army
(Surpasses the original studio version by far)

Tiny Dancer
(spot on cover)

I love Ben Folds' version of "Tiny Dancer" off this album. It's probably the best Elton John cover by anyone. :grinthumb

I've been listening to a lot of Ben Folds lately. For the life of me I can't figure out how Ben Folds isn't massively popular, yet at the same time I don't feel it'd make sense for Ben to break out of the underground. It's odd.

Exactly, I like my artist to have just enough success to know their name and enough of a lack of success to allow them to do what they want! Middle ground works best IMO! :grinthumb

Woohoo a Ben Folds thread!!! My favorite album is... ALL OF THEM!! Great pianist and songwriter.

Just a preview of some of the songs you have yet to introduce Soot, just a couple of my favorites:

Looking forward to you writing up the rest of the collection! Great stuff!

I love just about everything Ben Folds does. I first heard his music when "Still Fighting It" was used in an episode of Scrubs and I've not looked back since. :grinthumb

thank Soot for doing a thread on Ben Folds. He is a superb songwriter and deserves more recognition.

Wow, I think it's awesome to see fans finding this on their own and I may as well strike when the iron is hot and also while we have fans here who can fill in blanks! The next album as fans know was Songs For Silverman and I'm glad you guys are here because while I liked it, hell I have the SE of it, nothing was going to match Rockin' The Suburbs for me and that may have affected my stance a little. It was a very understated c.d. that for the first time felt like a little filler IMO. Some tracks like Give Judy My Notice felt like B-Sides of what could've been on the prior album. Not to say that their weren't great tracks! :D I'm hoping fans will be the complete opposite to give it contrast so speak up but for now here's:

Songs for Silverman

and the cool Special Edition case:

Here are the standout tracks for me:

Jesusland
(this as well as Landed name by Kuaizi were great singles that have grown on me quite a bit over time)

Time
(a nice somber track)

Prison Food
(most interesting on the album IMO, I like the journey the song goes on and it sounds like the more ambitious Ben Folds Five tracks)
