I grew up in the 80's with MTV: Hair Metal and non-hair metal, Madonna, Prince, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Cyndi Lauper, Van Halen, Violent Femmes, B-52's, The Police, Genesis, Cheap Trick, Ozzy, Billy Squire... all that stuff. I love it all.
The 80's was one big ball of pop culture. Everything started to meld together back in the MTV generation-movies, music, sports, TV. I still can't listen to Cyndi Lauper's Good Enough without thinking of The Goonies! it definitley was an enjoyable era for music.
Just a note about metal in the 80's:
There was "hair metal" and there was real metal. I hate how all the metal bands from the 80's get lumped into the "hair metal category", so i'm separating them into 2. I'm sure there will be some disputes but, IMO:
Hair Metal
Poison
Warrant
Winger
White Lion
Cinderella
Kix
Saigon Kick
Trixter
Britny Fox
Vixen
Dokken
Great White
Whitesnake
Testament
Ratt
Guns n Roses
WASP
LA Guns
Real metal
Iron Maiden
DIO
Black Sabbath
Scorpions
Judas Priest
Ozzy Osbourne
Motley Crue- this one could go either way, they were so glam, but they still kicked ass!
Queensryche
Anthrax
Exodus
Metallica
Megadeth
AC/DC
Def Leppard- again could go either way
Motorhead
