Had not heard this LP before so I gave a listen....interesting 'prog metal'...'Fates Warning' get lumped in with 'Queensryche' and 'Dream Theater' as well as a few others as the 'vanguards' of this genre.
Might be interesting to start a thread on this genre as to why we like some bands and think others are derivative...I find many of the 'hair bands' (metal, prog metal , and related areas) and others in this area to be often lacking in originality.
Someone had posted a Queensryche track/comment on a different thread recently and I have been trying to 'get into' more 'prog metal' over the last year. I find the Queensryche material to be a bit like 'melodic metal by numbers' as I do some of Dream Theater though I do like the DT early lps.
'Fates Warning' has bits of a classic/prog rock organic sound for me and interests me...anyway a track from 'Pleasant Shade of Gray'.
