So this question is for musicians (most likely every one on here) who plays regularly in jam sessions in any genre on any instrument.

As a relative Novice with a capitol N, I'd like to get down to the basics of every genre, the instruments and the various jam sessions in question.

What I'm wanting to know is...

What genre of music do you play?
What instrument do you play?
What is your role in the session?
What are the roles of the others in the session?
Do you like the set up of your current session?

The reason I ask is to find a genre and jam that I particularly like and an instrument that fits a role that I like as well. I already play guitar but am thinking of doubling on something else in a different genre on the side.

I don't play in any rock sessions and I may look for one in my area but I personally like the way Bluegrass sessions are set up. In the way that there is either a designated leader or a random leader kicks off a song and gives people chances to solo and have the spot light all in one song. I think that set up is brilliant and carefree and fun instead of the one lead guitar to rule them all in most more prominent modern genres. I'm also interested in Irish trad but from what I hear I don't much understand how a session goes. I'm also interested in hearing about other genres for the sake of knowledge and possible interests. Any genre and your personal sessions are applicable please do share. :)

Hello GreySatyr! I'm not a musician - in fact it'd be considered an act of murder for an instrument to be in my hands. However, since you're from NC - almost a neighbor - you might be interested in the great bluegrass/folk sessions that are held every weekend [generally early April thru late Oct.] in Mountain View, AR. Their music-on-the-square is renowned throughout the region. It draws folks, and their instruments, from far-n-wide to participate - or, as in my case, to enjoy. If you ever get down to this neck of the woods, put it on your itinerary - it's a wonderful musical celebration.

Thanks for that!
I will try to make it to a few this summer/fall if possible!

I'm recently getting interested in bluegrass and would love to hear some stuff live. :)

Thanks again.

I've got to question as why this thread was moved. Not that I'm against (probably get more views here) moving it but I think if anything it'd fit better in the musicians corner. I posted it in the everything else section because I'm asking the question to people who play in various genres and not just rock sessions...

I moved the thread to the rock lounge because it is a general music question & discussion. The lounge is where all general discussions go.

The Musicians Corner would also be a suitable forum for this thread, but you will get more views in this forum.

The Everything Else forum is for specific bands and artists who don't properly fit into the other music categories.
