I have tried to learn guitar a few times in the past and i have never gotten very far. I took lessons about 3 years ago but quit when football practices started. I tried to learn again online last year and gave up after about a month. I am going to try again and practice every day. I need to stay motivated and i was wondering what you guys think is the best way to learn. Should I take lessons again or try to learn online again??

Personally, if motivation is an issue, I'd go for physical lessons. That way, you've got a set time when you have to be learning guitar. With YouTube, it's all too easy to decide to do it tomorrow.

But, end of the day, you've really got to want to play the guitar if you're gonna learn.

Well if you get a good teacher then lessons are worth it but if not then I'd say starting with the blues scale that Garrett posted is a great places to start. It's the backbone for a LOT of iconic rock songs.

Thanks Garrett.
Do you recommend going 100% internet then? Lessons a waste of money?

Sounds like you get bored with it. Lessons cost.. Internet free.. Well sorta.. But there are tab sites if you want to learn a certain song.. You tube video's showing you how to play it.. Keep in mind there are some who play it different.
But what could help you is maybe trying a couple of instruments.. Maybe guitar is not your thing.. I play a Bass because it's alot easier for me that a six string.
Playing a piano is also good because it's a guitar basically because the notes are the same..
But you need to be interested and devote time to learning.. Everyday sort of thing..:cheers2

Thanks everybody, I've decided that I'm going to start online but if I feel that progression stops or I'm not playing every day I'm gonna try lessons

The most important part of learning how to play the guitar is time spent....playing the guitar. It sounds too simple to be of any use but that really is the most important thing. If you find yourself bored with playing maybe it really isn't your thing.

Of course in order to play you must know a few basic things. How to tune a guitar (at least to standard tuning) is absolutely essential but luckily there are electronic gizmos that pretty much do this for you. I'd still learn how to do it by ear because you will find yourself wanting to play yet not having your tuner on you. The second thing is knowing a few chords, scales and a basic sense for rythm.

After that, it's all gravy.

Thanks Khor I haven't really got bored with it in the past as much as I started doing something else during the beginner stage and never went back to it such as football, or going on vacation. I have an electric tuner and I've been starting out by learning chords.
