I sometimes draw a similar feel about Tommy Bolin and The James Gang... though Burn and Stórmbringer are quite good offerings. Come Taste The Band, I found hard to p. enetrate at the time..... but have much fondness for it now.

Machine Head and Made in Japan are the last things I bought from Purple.
And James Gang was not the same after Walsh left...he was James Gang for the most part as his later music showed. Bolin was a great guitar player but imo never rose to the level of good songwriter.
But he was killer on Spectrum...Cobhams fusion lp.....best guitar work he did.
I also used to have Bolins first lp....Zephyr...a band with Candy Givens on vocals....she was similar to JOplin.....
