Tool (5/2/06 - Seattle, Paramount Theatre)

It occurred to me that I hadn't written a review for the Tool concert that I saw back in 2006. And I figured it'd be a good idea considering it's by far one of the best performances I have seen. I'll try to explain it the best way I can remember. It's surprising that it's been a couple years since i've seen them, it seems like I just saw them yesterday.

Pre-show

I had not even known Tool were touring the West Coast if my dad hadn't texted me that morning telling me to call a number that he heard on the radio. So, since I knew he and myself were huge fans of this band, I decided to give the number a call. And as would be expected, I was put on hold for about 2 and a half hours. It may have been more, I only remember waiting and waiting and waiting and the operator kept saying "please stay on hold, the lines are very busy". So the more I heard that, I started to get a little less motivated, because i've never really been fortunate or lucky enough to get an opportunity like this. I started thinking in the back of my mind that I should hang up and forget about it, but I knew my dad wanted me to do this, and I know he would have been excited had I gotten through. And wouldn't you believe it, after hours of waiting, I had gotten through and the lady who was talking to me said something like: "hi, welcome to the (whatever hotline it was)", she explained that this was a line for buying tickets for the Tool concert coming up. As soon as she said that, I literally couldn't even fathom how excited I was, and I was even more excited to let my dad know that I got through. So, I asked her for 4 tickets to the show, and before I knew it, I was giving her my information in order to buy the tickets, and the tickets had arrived in the mail a week or so later. Just seeing the ticket stub say "Tool - Paramount Theater" just made me pinch myself because I thought I was dreaming. An opportunity like this comes very rarely for me, so I was beyond excited.

Concert

The concert as much as I remember was beyond incredible. My dad and I and two other people got pretty good seats. The stadium has the slanted down structure, so wherever you sit, it's a good seat. But we were to the right of the stage, a perfect view of the show. I was pretty stoked to have both gotten the tickets, and had gotten good seats. The show was obviously sold out, the place was packed, and the cheering was beyond words. Everybody was excited. And before we knew it, Maynard came out on stage and started to say all that the frontman says at the beginning of the show, typical concert etiquette. And they started to play, the first song they started with was Jambi off the 10,000 Days album:

They perform beyond words, I was more than impressed to hear that they sound even better than they do in studio. Maynard sounded great with his vocals, as would be expected.

So than they moved on to performing songs from a variety of albums, songs from Aenima, Lateralus, and some more 10,000 Days. Than the show was starting to come to a close, and I had not heard the one song I was hoping to hear, granted I had every other song that I wanted to hear. And the stage went dark, and the crowd was just cheering "encore encore!". It was about a 5 minute wait, and the place was still dark, so I had a feeling they were going to come back out for an encore. And they came back out and performed the one song I was waiting for!!

VICARIOUS

I was practically screaming my head off and going nuts. The song started and I couldn't even handle myself anymore. Once the vocals started, I just sang through the entire song.

As the song came to a close, I was a bit saddened to know that the concert was over, but Maynard came back out to tell us that we were one of the best crowds he's seen on their entire tour and said that they'll try to come back to Seattle sometime in the near future.

By far one of the most impressive live shows I have ever seen. I may have butchered how I really feel with this review, but it's tough to really put into words how incredible the experience was.

I would love to go back in time to the earlier Tool concert tours. I believe this was the 10,000 Days tour...which had an awesome setlist.

I would of loved to have seen the Lateralus Tour of 2001.
