1971 - Queen appeared at the University of Surrey in England. This was the group's first gig with the lineup of Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals).

2008 - The gravestone of former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis was stolen. The missing memorial stone was later replaced by a new stone with the same inscription — "Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80 / Love Will Tear Us Apart" — but in a different typeface.

2018 - Alan Longmuir from Scottish pop band Bay City Rollers died at age 70 after contracting an illness while on holiday in Mexico.

1971: “Get It On” by T. Rex was released. It became the band’s second chart-topping single in the UK and is featured on their sixth album, Electric Warrior. In the US, where the song was re-titled “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” to avoid confusion with a song of the same name by American jazz band Chase, it became their only top 10 entry on the Billboard Hot 100.

1973: Grand Funk Railroad released “We’re an American Band,” the lead single and title track from their seventh studio album. Written by singer and drummer Don Brewer and produced by Todd Rundgren, the song became the group’s first #1 hit in the US in September, which broadened the group’s appeal and lead to Brewer doing lead vocals on more songs.

1969 Brian Jones drowned while under the influence of drugs and alcohol after taking a midnight swim in his pool, aged 27. His body was found at the bottom of the pool by his Swedish girlfriend Anna Wohlin. The coroner's report stated "Death by misadventure", and noted his liver and heart were heavily enlarged by drug and alcohol abuse. Jones was one of the founding members of The Rolling Stones and in the early 60’s used the name "Elmo Lewis."

1971 American singer, songwriter and poet, Jim Morrison of The Doors was found dead in a bathtub in Paris, France, the cause of death was given as a heart attack. He co-wrote some of the group's biggest hits, including ‘Light My Fire’, ‘Love Me Two Times’, and ‘Love Her Madly.’ On the 25th anniversary of his death an estimated 15,000 fans gathered at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France to pay their respects.

1977 The Marshall Tucker Band's Country cross-over hit "Heard It In a Love Song" peaks at number 14 in the US. Interestingly, there is no one named Marshall Tucker in the band. The group named themselves after the previous tenant of their rehearsal hall, after finding a key tag with his name on it.
