This Day In Rock History: June 29th

1969 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience played at Mile High Stadium in Denver in what was to be their final gig together. The group formed in Westminster, London, in September 1966. They released three studio albums - Are You Experienced (1967), Axis: Bold as Love (1967) and Electric Ladyland (1968), all featured in the top 100 of the Rolling Stone list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time", at positions 15, 82 and 54 respectively. In 1992, the Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

2000 - The casket holding Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt is stolen from its mausoleum in Jacksonville, Florida, but left after vandals are unable to open it. The ashes of Steve Gaines, the band's guitarist who died in the same plane crash that killed Van Zandt, are spilled from his urn, which is also stolen.

1973 Ian Gillan quits Deep Purple at the conclusion of their show in Osaka, Japan. Graham Bonnet will briefly take his place before David Coverdale comes on board.

2019 Gary Duncan, guitarist and vocalist for the influential San Francisco Psychedelic Rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service, passed away at the age of 72. Never known for hit singles, the band still placed eight albums on the Billboard 200 between 1968 and 1975.

2021 Former Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton passed away at the age of 74. Lawton joined the band in 1976, replacing original lead singer David Byron just as the band was working on its 10th album, "Firefly". A year later, the LP "Innocent Victim" would produce the huge, international hit, "Free Me". Though Lawton would leave the band in 1979, he remained on good terms with his former bandmates.
