This Day In Rock History: June 19th
On this day in 1973, the stage musical, The Rocky Horror Show, opened in London. Written by Richard O’Brien and produced and directed by Jim Sharman, The Rocky Horror Show is a pastiche of horror and science-fiction films from the mid-20th century, and the story follows an engaged couple who get caught in a thunderstorm, and on seeking shelter, encounter a transvestite mad scientist who has created a monster, similar to Frankenstein’s monster, called Rocky. The stage production ran for a total of 2,960 performances and won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical. Actor Tim Curry, who portrayed Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the stage version, went on to reprise the role in the film version of the musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, also written by O’Brien and directed by Sharman, which released in 1975.
