1941 Jon Lord, keyboard player for Deep Purple and Whitesnake, is born in Leicester, England.

1947 Mick Box (lead guitarist for Uriah Heep) is born in Walthamstow, East London, England.

1949 George Bunnell (bass and rhythm guitarist for The Strawberry Alarm Clock) is born.

1950 Trevor Bolder (bass guitarist for Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash) is born in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.

1967 Dean Felber (bass guitarist for Hootie & the Blowfish) is born in Bethesda, Maryland.

1969, The Rolling Stones announce that guitarist Brian Jones will be replaced by the John Mayall Band’s Mick Taylor.

1972, Elvis Presley made entertainment history by performing four sold-out shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden. George Harrison, John Lennon David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Art Garfunkel were among music stars that attended the shows. The shows were recorded and became the album Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden.

1915, Born on this day, guitarist Les Paul, inventor of the Gibson Les Paul guitar who also had a 1953 UK No.7 single with ‘Vaya Con Dios’ and the US No.7 single ‘Hummingbird’ with Mary Ford featuring his multi-layered recording techniques. He also pioneered ‘close miking’ and echo delay recording. He broke his right arm in a car accident and had it set at an angle so he could still play guitar. Paul died in hospital in White Plains, New York at the age of 94 suffering from severe pneumonia on 13th Aug 2009.

1978, The Rolling Stones released Some Girls, their first studio album recorded with Ronnie Wood as a full member. The album cover was designed by Peter Corriston and featured The Rolling Stones in garish drag alongside select female celebrities and lingerie ads. The cover immediately ran into trouble when Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Liza Minnelli (representing her mother Judy Garland), Raquel Welch, and the estate of Marilyn Monroe threatened legal action.

1977: The J. Geils Band released their seventh studio album, Monkey Island. It was the band’s last album with Atlantic Records, first without an outside producer, and first with recording engineer David Thoener, who collaborated with them on future albums.

1978: The Moody Blues released their ninth studio album and first in six years, Octave. It was the group’s last album with producer Tony Clarke, as well as their last with keyboardist Mike Pinder, who left during sessions and was later replaced by former Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz.

1972 - Bruce Springsteen first signed with Columbia Records. Springsteen had built up a loyal following in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and his successful audition with Columbia talent scout John Hammond sealed his fate. He started to assemble the E Street Band from various former bandmates — including longtime members saxophonist Clarence Clemons, bassist Garry Tallent, and organist Danny Federici — and released the debut effort Greetings from Asbury Park, New Jersey in January of 1973.

1978 - Dire Straits released their self-titled debut album. It features “Sultans of Swing” and “Water of Love.”

2020 - Welsh rock guitarist Paul Chapman died on his 66th birthday. He is best-known for his work in bands such as UFO and Lone Star.
