1972 Reginald Dwight legally changed his name to Elton John.

1998 - Steve Perry officially left Journey, honoring an agreement made with Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain that they would reform the band without him if he was not able to tour. He was replaced with the similar-sounding Steve Augeri.

2016 After completing a tour with Guns N' Roses, Axl Rose took over as lead singer for AC/DC, filling in for Brian Johnson at a show in Lisbon after Johnson was told that continuing the tour could result in permanent hearing loss. Rose filled in on the remaining dates as a guest vocalist.

2016 Following his unexpected death, Prince took the top two spots on the Billboard albums chart with The Very Best of Prince at No. 1 and Purple Rain at No. 2.

Born on this day....

1945 American woodwind, keyboard player and vocalist Cornelius Bumpus who toured with The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. Bumpus died of a heart attack at age 58 on February 3, 2004 while on an airline flight from New York to California, where he was scheduled to perform at the Columbia College Jazz Concert Series. The plane made an emergency landing in Sioux City, Iowa but Bumpus died by the time the plane reached the ground.

1978 - Bob Dylan sold 90,000 tickets in less than eight hours for upcoming concerts at London's Wembley Empire Pool.

1978 Five thousand spectators showed up to watch a softball game between The Eagles and the staff of Rolling Stone magazine at Dedeaux Field at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The band and the magazine had been at odds for years after a series of negative reviews and the game was set up raise money for UNICEF. Final score: Eagles 15. Rolling Stone 8.

2026 Bonnie Tyler was placed in a medically induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery for a perforated intestine. The 74-year-old singer was admitted to Faro Hospital in the Algarve region, near her home in Portugal.

1940 Rick Nelson is born Eric Hilliard Nelson in Teaneck, New Jersey. His parents are Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, and he appears with them on the TV show The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet before becoming a recording star.

1941 Soul singer John Fred (of John Fred & His Playboy Band) is born John Fred Gourrier in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

1943 Paul Samwell-Smith (bassist for The Yardbirds) is born in Richmond, Surrey, England.

1943 Danny Whitten, guitarist in Neil Young's band Crazy Horse, is born in Columbus, Georgia. The song "The Needle And The Damage Done" is about Whitten, who dies of a drug overdose at 29.

1979 Supertramp's album, "Breakfast in America" turns Platinum as it continues its rise to #1 in the US. The group would enjoy three Top 15 singles: "The Logical Song" (#6 in 1979), "Goodbye Stranger" (#15 in 1979) and "Take the Long Way Home" (#10 in 1979).

2010 Norm Ezell, guitarist for The Five Americans on their 1967 hit "Western Union", died of cancer at the age of 68.

2024 John Barbata, drummer for The Turtles from 1966 to 1969, passed away at the age of 79. During his time with the band he recorded the hits "Happy Together", "She'd Rather Be with Me", "You Showed Me", "She's My Girl", and "Elenore". From 1970 to 1972 he played drums for Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young before touring and recording with Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship from 1972 to 1978.

1953: Alex Van Halen was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He was the drummer of the band Van Halen and co-founder alongside his younger brother, Eddie.

1965: Bob Dylan filmed what is now considered the first-ever promotional music video at the Savoy Hotel in London. The clip promoted his song "Subterranean Homesick Blues," which became the musician's first Top 40 hit.
