This Day In Rock History: April 17th


1971: All four former members of the Beatles had solo singles on the UK chart—“Another Day” by Paul McCartney, “Power To The People” by John Lennon, “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison, and “It Don’t Come Easy” by Ringo Starr.

1976: Thin Lizzy released “The Boys Are Back in Town,” the first single from their sixth studio album, Jailbreak. It became their second #1 in their home country of Ireland and their biggest hit in the US, where it reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

1980: Pink Floyd released “Run Like Hell,” the second single from their eleventh studio album, The Wall.

1965: RCA and Learjet Corporation announced they were developing a combination radio and 8-track tape deck, which would be in all cars by the fall.

1989: Black Sabbath released Headless Cross, their second with Tony Martin on vocals, which is regarded as one of the band's best.

1966: The Troggs released their cover of “Wild Thing,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top 100 in July and remained there for two weeks.

1982: Motörhead released Iron Fist, their last of three albums featuring the band's Three Amigos: Lemmy Kilmister, “Fast” Eddie Clarke, and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor.

2013: Exactly 37 years since radio station directors refused to play their newly released first single, Heart was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

1946 Skip Spence (of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, Jefferson Airplane) is born Alexander Lee Spence in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

2009 Sable Starr dies of brain cancer in Reno, Nevada, at the age of 51. In the 1970s she was a famous groupie, following rock stars around the venues of LA from the age of 14. At the time of her death she has retired from the rock and roll lifestyle and is working in a casino.

1981 Yes temporarily split up when bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White left the group to rehearse with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame. The intended super group was to be called XYZ (Ex Yes and Zeppelin), but Plant soon bowed out, saying he didn't like "complicated music." Yes would reform 2 1/2 years later, releasing "90125", which contained the number 1 single, "Owner of a Lonely Heart".

2012 Dick Clark, who brought Rock 'n' Roll into the homes of millions of viewers on his daytime TV show American Bandstand from 1956 to 1988, suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 82.

2023 Eddie Van Halen's iconic Fender "Frankenstrat" guitar that he played both onstage and in the classic video for Van Halen’s "Hot for Teacher" sold at a Sotheby's auction for $3.9 million.

2024 80-year-old Dickey Betts, guitarist and founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, died of cancer and COPD at his home in Osprey, Florida. He was the writer and singer on the Allmans' 1973, Hot 100 #2 single, "Ramblin' Man".

1947 Mark Volman (of The Turtles, Flo and Eddie, Mothers of Invention) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1980 32 year old English singer Brian Johnson joined Australian group AC/DC, replacing Bon Scott who had died after a drinks binge in February 1980. Johnson's first band was the Gobi Desert Canoe Club. He was also in a band called Fresh. From 1970, Johnson played with cabaret/club band The Jasper Hart Band, performing songs from the musical Hair. He and other members of the band went on to form Geordie.

2012 Levon Helm, died of throat cancer aged 71. A drummer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, Helm formed his own high school band, the Jungle Bush Beaters, at 17, he later joined The Hawks (who became Bob Dylan's backing group) who then became known as The Band. He sang on Band classics like 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,' 'Up on Cripple Creek,' 'Rag Mama Rag,' and 'The Weight.'
