1973 - Lou Reed was bitten on the buttocks by a zealous fan at a concert in Buffalo, N.Y. This is not a joke. The display of affection happened as Reed got ready to play the classic Velvet Underground tune "Waitin' For The Man." The crazed fan — screaming, "Leather!" — evaded security as he attacked Reed. The fan was ejected, and Reed commented afterward that the U.S. "seems to breed real animals."

2010 - Rock photographer Jim Marshall dies at age 74. Marshall was the official photographer for the Beatles' final concert in San Francisco's Candlestick Park, and he was head-photographer at Woodstock. He photographed Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at the Monterey Pop Festival, and Johnny Cash at San Quentin.

2020 - Bill Rieflin died at age 59. Rieflin came to prominence in the 1990s mainly for his work as a drummer with groups particularly in the industrial rock and industrial metal scenes such as Ministry, Swans, Chris Connelly, and Nine Inch Nails. He worked regularly with R.E.M. following the retirement of Bill Berry in 1997. He was a member of King Crimson from 2013 until his death.

1986 Van Halen released their seventh studio album 5150 (pronounced fifty-one-fifty) which became their first album to top the US chart. The first of four albums to be recorded with lead singer Sammy Hagar, who replaced David Lee Roth was named after Eddie Van Halen's home studio, 5150, in turn named after a California law enforcement term for a mentally disturbed person.

2001 A stretch of road on Highway 19 in Macon, Georgia, was named Duane Allman Boulevard, near where The Allman Brothers Band guitarist died aged 24 in a motorcycle crash on October 29, 1971.



Born on this day:

1949 Canadian musician Steve Lang best known for his role as a bassist in the rock band April Wine from 1976 to 1984. Their 1976 album The Whole World's Goin' Crazy reached No.1 in Canada and was the first in Canadian history to have platinum advanced sales orders. He died on 4 February, 2017 aged 67.

1965 The Rolling Stones' bass player Bill Wyman is knocked unconscious by an electrical shock from a microphone stand in Odense, Denmark.

1997 57 year old Harold Melvin, leader of the Philadelphia Soul group Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes, died of heart related problems. The group is remembered for their 1972, US #3 hit, "If You Don't Know Me By Now".

1986: The Rolling Stones released their eighteenth British and twentieth American studio album, Dirty Work. The LP was recorded during a turbulent time for the band, and all five members were rarely together for recording sessions. As a result, number of guest musicians appeared on the album, including Jimmy Page, Bobby Womack, Ivan Neville, and Chuck Leavell. It was also the last album to feature former member and frequent piano contributor Ian Stewart, who died shortly before the album’s release.

1972 Deep Purple's album Machine Head is released in America. Most of it was recorded in their hotel after the Montreux Casino, where they planned to record it, burned down, a story told in the song "Smoke On The Water."

2007 Elton John sets the record for the most performances at New York's Madison Square Garden when he performs there for the 60th time – on his 60th birthday.

2009 Dan Seals (of England Dan & John Ford Coley) dies of cancer at age 61.

1967, Pink Floyd played three gigs in 24 hours. The appeared at the Ricky Tick Club at the Thames Hotel in Windsor, England, then headed for a late show at the New Yorker Discotheque in Swindon, with The Outer Limits as support. Lastly, then played at the Shoreline Club at the Caribbean Hotel in Bognor Regis, as part of an Easter Weekend All-Nighter.

1968, The 58th and final episode of The Monkees TV series was broadcast in the US.

1974, Rolling Stone reports that concerts by Yes, Gregg Allman, and the Beach Boys have all been hit by streakers, no doubt inspired by Ray Stevens’ No. 1 hit “The Streak.” Meanwhile, Allman himself performs the last date of a solo tour. To reassure the audience that the Allman Brothers Band are not splitting up, the entire band comes out and performs a 90-minute encore.
