This Day In Rock History: September 24th

1966: Jimi Hendrix arrived in London with his soon-to-be manager and former bassist for the Animals, Chas Chandler. Hendrix had little more than the shirt on his back after selling all his belongings to pay off his New York hotel bill. Shortly after arriving, Hendrix formally changed his name from James to Jimi and signed with Chandler. His new manager then began auditioning musicians to perform with Hendrix, ultimately finding bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, who accompanied the American guitarist as the Jimi Hendrix Experience. On the day of his arrival in the UK, Hendrix played his first show in London, a solo gig at a nightclub called The Scotch of St. James. After nine months of recording and touring in Britain, Hendrix returned to the US to play at the Monterey International Pop Festival in California.

1967: Traffic made their live UK debut at the Saville Theatre in London.

1971: T. Rex released their sixth studio album, Electric Warrior. The album marked a shift away from the folk-oriented sound of the group’s previous albums toward pioneering a flamboyant pop rock style of music known as glam rock.

1991: Little Feat released their tenth studio album, Shake Me Up. It was the group’s last album recorded with frontman Craig Fuller, their only album to feature no lead vocals from keyboardist Bill Payne, and their last album with cover art by Neon Park before his death in 1993.

1972 Black Sabbath released their fourth studio album, 'Black Sabbath Vol. 4'. The album which features a monochrome photograph of Ozzy Osbourne with hands raised, taken during a Black Sabbath concert was originally to be titled 'Snowblind', after one of several songs referring to the band's cocaine use.

1980 John Bonham, drummer with Led Zeppelin, died aged 32 after a heavy drinking session. ‘Bonzo’ was found dead at guitarists Jimmy Page's house of what was described as asphyxiation, after inhaling his own vomit after excessive vodka consumption, (40 shots in 4 hours). During live sets his drum solo, ‘Moby Dick,’ would often last for half an hour and regularly featured his use of his bare hands. In 2007, Ludwig issued a limited edition drum kit in Bonham's memory.

1999 Stephen Canaday of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils was killed when the vintage WW II plane he was flying in, rolled, inverted and crashed into a tree. The pilot failed to maintain speed which resulted in a stall.

1968, Welsh singer Mary Hopkin was at number one on the UK singles chart with “Those Were The Days.” Hopkins had signed to The Beatles Apple label after appearing on UK TV talent show Opportunity Knocks.

1975, Jackie Wilson had a heart attack while performing live on stage at the Latin Casino, New Jersey. Wilson collapsed into a coma suffering severe brain damage. Ironically, he was in the middle of singing one of his biggest hits, “Lonely Teardrops” and was two words into the line, “….my heart is crying” when he collapsed to the stage, striking his head heavily. Wilson died on 21st January 1984. Van Morrison wrote the song “Jackie Wilson Said,” covered by Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

2000, Ozzy Osbourne formally requested that Black Sabbath be removed from the nomination list for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Calling the inclusion “meaningless”, Osbourne went on to say “Let’s face it. Black Sabbath have never been media darlings. We’re a people’s band and that suits us just fine.”

1965 A former member of The New Christy Minstrels, Barry McGuire led the US hit parade with "Eve Of Destruction". The controversial doom and gloom theme of the record was enough to have it banned from airplay by some American radio stations. The backing musicians on the track were members of The Wrecking Crew, P. F. Sloan on guitar, Hal Blaine on drums, and Larry Knechtel on bass. The song was offered to The Byrds, but they rejected it, and The Turtles recorded a version instead. Their rendition was issued as a track on their 1965 debut album "It Ain't Me Babe", shortly before McGuire's version was cut. McGuire recalled in later years that "Eve of Destruction" had been recorded in one take on a Thursday morning, reading lyrics scrawled on a crumpled piece of paper. The following Monday he got a phone call from the record company at 7:00 am, telling him to turn on the radio, his song was playing.

1971 Cat Stevens' "Peace Train" is released in the US where will reach #7 on the Billboard Pop chart. Outside of America, the song was not issued as a single because Island Records wanted to encourage people to buy the album rather than the 45.
