2020 "Little Richard" Penniman, a founding father of Rock 'n' Roll, died of bone cancer at the age of 87. Placing just nine songs in the Billboard Top 40 between 1956 and 1958, he nonetheless influenced dozens of prominent musicians and set the standard for showmanship with his pompadour hairdo, over the top makeup, and glass-beaded shirts.

1943 Rocker Bruce Milner (pianist for Every Mother's Son) is born.

1944 Rock guitarist Richie Furay (of Buffalo Springfield, Poco) is born in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

1950 Tom Petersson (bass guitarist for Cheap Trick) is born in Rockford, Illinois.

1953 John "Rhino" Edwards (bass guitarist for Status Quo) is born in Chiswick, London, England.

1987 The Grateful Dead shoot the video for "Touch Of Grey" after a concert in Monterey, California. After the show, the shoot is set up and the audience brought back in to watch two different performances of the song: one by the band and another by their skeleton likenesses - the "Dead Ringers." It's the first music video by the band, and it goes into rotation on MTV, giving the group their first hit single.

1966 – The Doors played at the Whisky A Go Go, West Hollywood, California auditioning for the position of the venue’s house band.

1967 – Sandie Shaw was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Puppet On A String’. This week’s two highest new entries were Jimi Hendrix with ‘The Wind Cries Mary’ and The Kinks ‘Waterloo Sunset’.

1975 – KISS, The James Gang and Rush all appeared at Ohio Northern University in Ada Ohio. Advance tickets cost $5.00.

William “Billy” Martin Joel was born on May 9, 1949, in New York City. He is 75. Often nicknamed “Piano Man,” Joel is one of the best-selling musicians in the world. He has released 13 studio albums, including four that hit No. 1. After nearly two decades, Joel released a new single in early 2024, “Turn the Lights Back On.”

1969, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, The Move, Status Quo, Tremeloes, Marmalade, Love Sculpture, Van Der Graaf Generator all appeared at Nottingham’s Pop & Blues Festival, held at the Notts County Football Ground, Nottingham, England. Presented by John Peel, tickets 22/6 at the gate. Floyd closed the day’s events, playing in the pouring rain.

1999 American singer, songwriter poet, cartoonist, screenwriter, and author of children's books Shel Silverstein died of a heart attack aged 57. Wrote, 'A Boy Named Sue' for Johnny Cash (which Silverstein won a Grammy for in 1970) and many songs for Dr Hook including 'Sylvia's Mother' and 'The Cover of the Rolling Stone.'

1946 '60s psychedelic rocker Donovan is born Donovan Philips Leitch in Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland.

1946 Graham Gouldman (bassist for 10cc) is born in Broughton, Salford, Lancashire, England.

1946 Rock guitarist Dave Mason (of Traffic) is born in Worcester, England.

1947 Rocker Jay Ferguson (Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne) is born John Arden Ferguson in Burbank, California. As a composer, he will create the theme to NBC-TV's The Office.

1960 Paul Hewson is born in Dublin. He shortens his nickname from Bono Vox (Latin for "good voice") to simply Bono and fronts the band U2.

2020 - British bass guitarist John McKenzie died. He was a member of bands Global Village Trucking Company and Man and played on numerous singles, notably for Eurythmics, the Pretenders and Alison Moyet. McKenzie was also a touring musician with Lionel Richie, Dr. John, Bob Dylan, Peter Green and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

1974 Led Zeppelin launch their own record label, Swan Song Records, with lavish parties in New York and Los Angeles. The company ceased active operations in 1983 and now exists only to reissue previously released material.
