2010 Rush were inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. They were recognized for the songs "Closer to the Heart," "The Spirit of Radio," "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight" and "Subdivisions."

2013 Rock guitarist and session musician Hugh McCracken died of leukemia in New York City at the age of 70. He appeared on many recordings by Steely Dan, Billy Joel, Roberta Flack, B. B. King, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, The Monkees, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Carly Simon, Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, The Four Seasons, and Daryl Hall & John Oates. Because of such high demand for his work, McCracken declined Paul McCartney's invitation to help form his new band, Wings, after appearing on his 1971 album “Ram.”

2011 Ray Herr, guitarist for The Ides Of March on their 1970 hit "Vehicle", died of esophageal cancer at age 64.

1973 Dr Hook And The Medicine Show got their picture on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine after their hit, 'The Cover of Rolling Stone' reached No. 6 on the US singles chart. According to members of the group, they really did buy five copies for their mothers, just like the song said.

1943 Chad Allan (original lead singer of The Guess Who) is born Allan Peter Stanley Kowbel in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

1947 Bobby Kimball (frontman for Toto) is born in Orange, Texas.

1980 Brian Johnson of the band Geordie gets a new, slightly more high-profile gig: replacing the deceased Bon Scott in AC/DC. Johnson's first album with the band is Back In Black, which becomes the second-best selling album worldwide behind Thriller.

1945 Eric Clapton is born in Ripley, England. He forms the bands Cream, Blind Faith and Derek & the Dominos. His birth name is often erroneously reported as "Eric Clapp," as Clapp is the surname of his grandparents who raised him.

1948 Black Oak Arkansas lead singer Jim "Dandy" Mangrum is born in Michigan.

2020 American soul singer Bill Withers died from heart complications aged 81. His hits include 'Just The Two Of Us', 'Lovely Day' and 'Use Me'. On 'Lovely Day', he set the record for the longest sustained note on a US chart hit, holding a high E for 18 seconds. His ballad 'Ain't No Sunshine', earned him his first Grammy award.
