1947 Graeham Goble, guitarist and harmony vocalist of Little River Band, is born in Adelaide, Australia. He writes the band's biggest hit, "Reminiscing."

1948 Gary Thain (bassist for Uriah Heep) is born in Christchurch, New Zealand.

1951 Rock singer Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen (of Toto) is born in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

1975 Fleetwood Mac play their first concert with new members Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks at a show in El Paso, Texas.

1971 Mountain, The Faces, and Pink Floyd play at the Crystal Palace Bowl in London. Performing in front of a large pond, a number of fish are killed when Floyd set off smoke flares under water. They were later billed for the dead fish.

2020 Phil May, the frontman of the UK band The Pretty Things, died at the age of 75 after suffering complications from emergency hip surgery.

1967: After a dinner party hosted by Beatles manager Brian Epstein to mark the completion of the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, Paul McCartney went to join Keith Moon and Eric Burdon at a Georgie Fame show at London’s Bag O’ Nails club. There he met American photographer Linda Eastman, and two years later, they were married.

1970: Free released “All Right Now,” the lead single from their third studio album, Fire and Water. It became the band’s biggest hit and reached the top 10 on charts around the world, including #2 in the UK and #4 in the US.

1981: The Moody Blues released their tenth album, Long Distance Voyager. It was the group’s first album featuring keyboardist Patrick Moraz, who replaced founding member Mike Pinder. The album reached #7 in the UK and became the group’s second #1 album in both the US and Canada.

1982 Asia went to No.1 on the US album chart with their self-titled album. It spent a total of nine weeks at No.1 and became the best-selling album in the US for the year 1982. The supergroup included former members of several veteran progressive rock bands, namely bassist/vocalist John Wetton (formerly in Mogul Thrash, Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, U.K. and Wishbone Ash), guitarist Steve Howe (formerly in Yes), keyboardist Geoff Downes (of Yes and The Buggles) and drummer Carl Palmer (formerly in The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Atomic Rooster and Emerson, Lake & Palmer).

1946 Roger Earl (drummer for Foghat, Savoy Brown) is born in Hampton Court Palace, London, England.

1947 Darrell Sweet (drummer for Nazareth) is born in Bournemouth, England.

1949 Rock guitarist William "Sputnik" Spooner (of Grateful Dead, The Tubes) is born in Phoenix, Arizona.

1965 Krist Novoselic (bass guitarist for Nirvana) is born in Compton, California.

1983 Michael Jackson does the Moonwalk for the first time on TV when he breaks out the move on the Motown 25th anniversary TV special.

1970 Lead guitarist Randy Bachman quits The Guess Who. He would later form Bachman-Turner Overdrive and enjoy six Billboard Top 40 hits over the next six years that included "Let It Ride (#23), "Takin' Care Of Business" (#12) and "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" (#1).

1978 Joe Walsh releases his fourth album, "But Seriously, Folks...". Guest musicians included the other four members of the Eagles, Don Henley – backing vocals, Glenn Frey – backing vocals, Timothy B. Schmit – backing vocals, and Don Felder – pedal steel guitar. The album would climb to #8 on the Billboard 200 and an included single, "Life's Been Good" made it to #12 on the Hot 100.

1981 "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes rocketed to the top spot on Billboard's singles chart, where it would remain for six weeks. Carnes received a personal thank-you letter for the song from actress Bette Davis, saying that it had impressed her young grandson.

2026 Dennis Locorriere, the lead singer and guitarist for Dr. Hook, died at the age of 76 after a long battle with kidney disease. The band reached the Billboard Top 40 ten times, including the Top Ten hits "Sylvia's Mother" (#5 in 1972), "The Cover Of Rolling Stone" (#6 in 1973), "Only Sixteen" (#6 in 1976), "Sharing The Night Together" (#6 in 1978), "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman" (#6 in 1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (#5 in 1980).

2010 Ronnie James Dio, singer with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his own band Dio died after a six-month battle with stomach cancer. He was 67 years old. Dio’s career began in 1957 with The Vegas Kings, which later changed to Ronnie and the Rumblers, then Ronnie and the Redcaps, then in 1961, Ronnie Dio and the Prophets. In 1967, Dio and Prophets guitarist Nick Pantas formed the Electric Elves, which shortened its name to Elf. The band’s success eventually landed them an opening slot for Deep Purple which exposed Dio’s voice to Deep Purple’s guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore, who later recruited Dio and other members of Elf for his new band Rainbow.

1965 - Driving away from a gig at the Civic Hall in Long Beach, the limo taking the Rolling Stones back to their hotel was besieged by fans who caved in the roof by standing on it. The band attempted to hold the roof up while their chauffeur drove off with bodies falling onto the road.

1970, Crosby Stills Nash & Young went to number one on the album chart with Deja Vu.

1970, Pink Floyd played at the Warehouse in New Orleans, with support from The Allman Brothers Band and Country Funk. The band had $40,000 worth of equipment stolen from their truck overnight. Nick Mason told Melody Maker in an later interview, “We sat at our hotel thinking – ‘Well that’s it. It’s all over.’ – We were pouring out our troubles to a girl who worked at the hotel and she said her father worked for the FBI. The police hadn’t helped us much, but the FBI got to work and four hours later it was found.”
