This Day In Rock History: April 22nd

1970: Iron Butterfly’s fourth album and first live album, simply titled Live, was released. It was the band’s last album to be recorded with the longstanding quartet of Erik Brann, Ron Bushy, Lee Dorman, and Dough Ingle.

1977: Pink Floyd began the American leg of their “In The Flesh Tour,” also known as their “Animals Tour,” with a show at the Miami Baseball Stadium. Shows featured large inflatable puppets, a pyrotechnic “waterfall,” and one of the biggest and most elaborate stages to date, including umbrella-like canopies that rose from the stage to protect the band from the elements.

2003: The Yardbirds released Birdland, the band’s first studio album in over 35 years. Drummer Jim McCarty and rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja were the only members from the 1960s group to appear on the album and were joined by new members bassist and vocalist John Idan, lead guitarist Gypie Mayo, and harmonica player Alan Glen. The album, which is made up of new and classic Yardbirds songs, also features guest appearances by Joe Satrianai, Steve Vai, Slash, Brian May, and former Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck.

1971 The Rolling Stones released their classic album Sticky Fingers in the UK. The band's first release on their own label via Atlantic Records, the cover was designed by Andy Warhol, who was paid $15,000 for his efforts. The LP sleeve featured a close-up of a pair of jeans with a working zip. Widely assumed to be that of Mick Jagger, the crotch photographed for the cover was actually that of actor Joe Dallesandro.

2012 American country rock bass guitarist Chris Ethridge died age 65 from pancreatic cancer. He was a member of the International Submarine Band and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Ethridge also worked with Nancy Sinatra, Leon Russell, Delaney Bramlett, Johnny Winter, Randy Newman, Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Jackson Browne, and Willie Nelson.

1995, Peter Hodgson from Liverpool found a tape in his attic containing sixteen of The Beatles’ earliest recordings made in 1959. The tape included “Hello Little Girl,” a Lennon-McCartney composition that the Beatles never recorded, and Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah, I Love Her So.” The sessions had been made on a reel-to-reel recorder that Hodgson’s father had lent to Paul McCartney.

1975 Peter Ham, British singer, songwriter with Badfinger committed suicide by hanging himself in the garage of his Surrey home, aged 27. Ham co-wrote “Without You,” with bandmate Tom Evans, who also later committed suicide. The song won an Ivor Novello award for Song Of The Year in 1973, and was a hit for Harry Nilson and Mariah Carey. Ham was a founding member of The Iveys, who later became Badfinger. They were signed to the Beatles’ Apple label. Their first hit “Come And Get It” was written by Paul McCartney.

1976, Paul and Linda McCartney spent the evening with John Lennon at his New York Dakota apartment and watched Saturday Night Live on TV. Producer of the show Lorne Michaels made an offer on air asking The Beatles to turn up and play three songs live. Lennon and McCartney thought about taking a cab to the studio, but decided they were too tired. This was the last time Lennon and McCartney were together.
