Chaos A.D. is where Sepultura had everything come together. With this album they went from being an excellent band into one of most unique metal bands out at the time.
Their political rants are more focused than ever.
The band may have roots in death metal especially with their thick, chunky guitars, busy percussion, and hoarsely shouted vocals, but to call Sepultura a true death metal band is not true. They did flirt heavily with the style, but Chaos A.D. is rooted just as much in hardcore punk especially with stripped-down assault. It features a cover of New Model Army's "The Hunt" and a collaboration with hardcore punk singer Jello Biafra on "Biotech Is Godzilla." While thrash giants like Metallica and Megadeth were making their music to have greater accessibility, Sepultura went the opposite way. Their aggression actually increased. Also Sepultura began to draw upon the influences of their native Brazil with this record (it would show greatly with their next release Roots)
Their songwriting became airtight. The real power behind the album is the powerful drumming by Igor Cavalera that gives Chaos A.D. its punch. This album has great replay value. IMO there isn't a wasted song on the album. Chaos A.D. ranks as one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time IMO.
If you are a fan of thrash metal, groove metal, death metal, and even hardcore punk pick this up.
