The Scissor Sisters are a group from New York City that form in 2001. They draw from glam rock, pop, disco, and various other genres. Upon introducing my friend John to them he described their music as if "the Bee Gees and Elton John had a baby that was dunked in disco." and that's a fairly accurate assessment. :heheh:

While they've not had a large amount of success in their native country of the US they are hugely popular in Canada, Australia, and Europe, particularly the UK with both their self titled debut album and it's followup "Ta-Dah" reaching number one with the former being the highest selling album there that year.

The Scissor Sisters had a hard time getting off the ground for a couple years but in late 2003 their cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" started to get played by DJ's in British clubs. This brought the band to the attention of the label Polydor who immediately brought the band in the record their first album.
After it's release their self titled album received little attention but upon the release of their version of "Comfortably Numb" as a single (which reached #10 on the UK charts) the album began to build the momentum that would turn it into a runaway hit. After the success of their breakthrough single four other singles were released, "Take Your Mama", "Laura", "Mary", and "Filthy/Gorgeous", all of which reached the top 20 in the UK with the latter becoming their highest charting single at the time, reaching #5. After five top 20 singles it is no surprise that the album reach the #1 slot, with it eventually going multi-platinum as well as not only being the highest selling album of 2004 but also becoming the 10th highest-selling album of the 21st century, and the 51st biggest-selling of all time in the UK. Despite such substantial success overseas the album didn't even crack the top 100 on the Billboard charts.

In May 2005, after substantial touring, the Scissor Sisters reentered the studio to record their follow up. Early in the recording process the band achieved one of their dreams by collaborating with Elton John on the songs "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" and "Intermission" where he helped write the songs as well as providing piano. Sir Elton's aid played off big time as "I Don't Feel Like Dancing", the lead single to "Ta-Dah", became the biggest hit of their career as it rocketed to number one in several countries and was one of the highest selling singles in the UK that year. Upon "Ta-Dah"'s release the Scissor Sisters achieved double success as it debut at #1 during the four week period where "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" topped the UK's single charts. "Ta-Dah" even made a decent showing in the US market by peaking at #19.

Just a few days ago The Scissor Sisters released their third album, "Night Work", but I have not actually gotten a chance to listen to anything off it yet but I'll be sure to provide input once I do.

Re: The Scissor Sisters

Awesome thread Cosmic! Big Scissor Sisters fan here! I actually got two of my friends into the first c.d. after being introduced to them by a friend at work. I love them because they are fun and campy as well as being legitimately talented. It's great car music if you have the right friends with the right sense of humor. Singing along to this is just as fun as The Darkness! Want to know how much I got into these guys? I not only have both albums and the newest one on the way but I even have the DVD!

They are a great band and some of their stage antics have me on the floor laughing! :oyea:

My two favorite songs by these guys are:

Filthy, Gorgeous

Tits On The Radio

Ironically, on the new single they play things straight minus camp and it's still great. I mean, I really love the new song!

Yeah, I actually downloaded the the new album last night and have been listening to it today and as of right now I think "Fire With Fire" is the best track on it. It's a solid Scissor Sisters album and I'm hoping it grows on me more because I don't quite thinks it's as good as their first two albums, especially since it's following "Ta-Dah" which is my favorite by them.

Re: The Scissor Sisters

Thank you for the post re Scissor Sisters, Cosmic. I love this group, and actually managed to see them in England a few years back. They were supporting Duran Duran of all people, I had actually booked to see Duran Duran and couldnt believe my lukk when I knew Scissor Sisters were supporting them.

The whole evening was amazing, one of the best gigs I have been to and I even got myself a T Shirt :D

I am gutted that they are over in the UK again and I havent managed to get to see them , theyve played Glastonbury, I love Jake, I think he is awesome and he even did a track with Kylie, they looked very good together, they would definately make a good double act :D

I believe he has collaborated on one of her tracks on her new album Aphrodite.

I have the first two albums and have yet to purchase their third one, but Im liking the new tracks on the new album.

Its just so nice to be able to listen to their music and they make you feel happy.

Although Land of a thousand dreams makes me feel sad :-(

I own the second album and listenned to it just a couple of days ago. I have an arkward spilt between the over bouncy nature of some of the songs and the melodic brilliance. The one song I'm 100% sure on is land of 1000 words whcih I daresay is their best song

That's awesome Cinder. I would love to see them live. I've heard wonderful things about their live shows.

Well the bouncy nature is what makes them quit popular in clubs I'd imagine. Also I agree that "Land of a Thousand Words" is one of their best songs. :grinthumb

SS is an okay and certainly interesting band. They have a big following here in NYC. Saw them a few times back in the early and mid 00's. Very energetic band live and they do all sort of strange stuff on stage. Don't own their albums but do have a few songs.

Re: The Scissor Sisters

I've been told by so many people that I'd enjoy the Scissor Sisters. I've listened to their Ta-Dah album, heard their new single and watched them on TV at Glastonbury.....I've really tried but I still don't get it.

The high pitched singing doesn't help but to be honest, I think they're just too happy and bouncy for me! :bonk:
