I'm a pretty big Sabbath w/Ozzy fan. But I'm a lil confused. I know Sabbath is metal but alotta Sabbath w/Ozzy doesn't sound too much like the metal I'm expecting. Of course I've listened to Paranoid, Iron Man, NIB, Wicked Women, War Pigs, Symptom Of Universe, Junior's Eyes (fav Sabbath tune) a ton of times but I would definitely say it sounds more hard rock than metal or am I missing something. I know the majority of the metal bands out now credit Sabbath as the fathers but I'm sure I'm missing something or are they talking about Sabbath post Ozzy???

I personally consider Sabbath to be the first heavy metal band especially the Ozzy stuff, they had a sound that was heavier than the typical hard rock band in my opinion. Sabbath just had more characteristics that pointed to heavy metal for me. Some say rock but again for me they had traits about the music that sounded more heavy metal.

Well of course nowadays they don't sound very heavy because the genre has evolved and redefined itself through the years. however back in the day they were possibly the most consistently heavy band around (Led Zeppelin did a lot of softer songs and Deep Purple only had one really heavy album). When people heard the title track from they debut in 1970 they shat their pants because it was so friggin SCARY. So yeah you got to take into account the time period in which the albums were created.

I agree with Riff Raff. Although to me they were part of the great triumvirate of heavy rock in the early 70s (Purple/Zeppelin/Sabbath) they weren't as musically adventurous as Zeppelin or Purple. There was something different and unique about them, certainly on the albums up to "Sabotage", which we would now probably label as the start of what became known as metal - the start of the real cranium-crushing riffs.
