Mick Jagger hinted that the rumours of a fully-fledged Rolling Stones tour in 2013 could be a reality as the band played the last of their birthday-party shows.
The veteran frontman last night told the audience in New Jersey’s Prudential Center: “This is our last show…of the 50th anniversary tour. Hope to see you again soon.”
Their final appearance – their eighth in total including two warm-ups and the 12-12-12 charity concert – featured more special guests than previous outings.
Pop star Lady Gaga sang the female part on Gimme Shelter, the Black Keys played on Who Do You Love, Bruce Springsteen assisted on Tumbling Dice, while Mick Taylor led Midnight Rambler.
The crowd also witnessed a four-solo tour-de-force when John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr shared lead parts with Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood during Going Down.
In a poignant moment Jagger dedicated Wild Horses to the victims of the Newtown elementary school shooting in which 20 children aged between 5 and 10 along with seven women were killed by a gunman who then ended his own life. The massacre took place less than two hours’ drive from the venue on Friday.
The show was more than half an hour longer than the Stones’ penultimate appearance at the same venue on Thursday, with at least one reviewer hailing it as boasting much more energy and drive. NJ.com said: “Thursday night was good. This night is great. Don’t see how anyone could be disappointed by this show.”
During the concert, which was available to watch worldwide by pay-per-view, the band delivered a rendition of Dead Flowers, which had been chosen by a fan vote via their official app.
Former Stones guitarist Taylor is convinced there’s more to come from the band. He tells Billboard: “I think they feel re-energised, and possibly very enthusiastic about doing things in the future. I have an intuitive feeling that if they want to do some more shows, they can. There’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to.”
He also revealed that the band had rehearsed Can’t You Hear Me Knocking, but he hadn’t been sure it would make it into the set. In the end it didn’t.
