AIC, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden which is kind of weird since my favorite musician from all of them was in Soundgarden.

Sorry, not really my generation, so I don't know enough to actually rank them.

I mean, I know the stuff you hear on the radio, but no deep cuts.

They all sound alike to me. (that's not a dis, just an outsider's ear observation)

I know grunge was massively important when it arrived.

Late 80s, hair metal was on it's last legs. You can be 5% music and 95% looks for only so long before people get bored with it.

Grunge was fresh and had an edge that the music world really needed at the time.

It changed the direction of music right when it needed it.

Of those 4....Soundgarden, NIrvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains....but I would have put in Stone TEmple PIlots over AIC.

In 1991 my list would have been a little different. I really love Stone Temple Pilots, but…
Nevermind from Nirvana sounded so different at first.
Facelift from Alice In Chains is a hard rock album and predates Nevermind of course.
I’ve heard those early albums or E.P. from Soundgarden and they are awful. Once “grunge” was established, the albums that followed were ok. I like Temple Of The Dog better than any Soundgarden album.
I saw Alice In Chains twice in concert.
So from this list:
4. Soundgarden
3. Nirvana
2. Alice In Chains
1. Pearl Jam
I like a great number of Pearl Jam’s songs and albums.
