Blackmore's Advocate
My first time seeing Frampton and he didn't disappoint. Got there a few minutes late and he was in the middle of a Motown cover (can't remember). Anyway he went into Show Me The Way, Lines On My Face and All I Want to Be (Is By Your Side) after that before going into a 4 song insturmental montage from his latest album. The first two were fusion type jams reminescent of Jeff Beck (only not as daring). Good stuff though with lots of cool leads. Then a jazzy thing where he had a hollow body amplified acoustic. He then did an insturmental version of Black Hole Sun playing the vocal part with a wah and talk box. That was impressive. Then Baby I Love Your Way and the acoustic insturmental Penny For Your Thoughts (great fingerpicking). I Want To Go To The Sun was next and that was really good. I think Do You Feel Like We Do closed the Show. For the encore he did Humble Pie's I Don't Need No Doctor, a smoking version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps and another tune I didn't know but with extended guitar solos that were pretty amazing.
Great show all around. It certainly was a Les Paul fest. He played his signature model (the black one with three humbuckers-very cool guitar) a gold top and a sunburst. He's got the great Audley Freed in his band that really added to the show. They were trading off leads all night and he played mostly Les Pauls also. I've been a fan of his since the early 90's with Cry Of Love. He also played with The Black Crows and Jimmy Page. He did break out a Fender Jaguar and a Gibson Thunderbird but other than that this show was a total Les Paul endorsement. Frampton is just a great rock guitar player who can pull off any style. Probably one of the best guitar shows I've seen in the last decade. The sound was great. I noticed he had three Marshall cabinets placed right in front of the drum riser blocking about half of the bass drum. Whatever, he's been at it for 40 years and it sounded great so he must know what he's doing. I'm definately picking up his latest insturmental album.
