To conclude his 19-date On The Run World Tour, Paul McCartney returned to his stomping ground of Liverpool, England on Dec. 20 for a sold-out, three-hour performance at the Echo Arena. During the show, McCartney played more than 30 Beatles and Wings songs, as well as some of his recent solo material. McCartney dusted off ‘Penny Lane’ for the special performance, and between numbers he spoke about growing up in Speke, his fondness for Liverpool and his friendship with late Beatles guitarist George Harrison.

The concert opened with ‘Hello, Goodbye’ and ‘Junior’s Farm’ and closed with ‘Hey Jude.’ Other highlights included ‘Drive My Car,’ ‘Paperback Writer,’ ‘The Long and Winding Road,’ ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ ‘Band on the Run,’ ‘Back in the USSR,’ ‘Day Tripper,’ ‘Helter Skelter’ and ‘A Day in the Live/Give Peace a Chance.’

McCartney played bass, guitar and piano during the night and enhanced the performance with fireworks and flames for ‘Live and Let Die’ and falling snow and the Scottish Pipe Band for the Christmas song ‘Mull of Kintyre.’

Two four-song encores capped the night. The first began with a medley of ‘The Word’ and ‘All You Need is Love’ and the second concluded with a compilation of ‘Golden Slumbers,’ ‘Carry That Weight’ and ‘The End.’

The UK paper The Sun reported that McCartney fell down a set of stairs at the end of the show, but even that couldn’t dampen the spirit of the 69-year old legend, who was allegedly uninjured by the tumble.

Before the show, the venue’s chief executive Bob Prattey presented McCartney an Echo Arena Icon award.

When I saw McCarney's television special years ago, when he went on a massive world tour I was blown away by everything, his solo material and then when he did the Beatles songs and the overwhelming love/emotion shown by fans of my generation and older I was feeling goosebumps watching and singing along.

That is a great set-list and a fitting tribute to his friends, as you get older you begin to treasure those moments of your past more and more. And while he still has the chutzpah to tour and carry them off then what could be better than playing a concert like that one.

He is almost a freak of nature. 69 years old, singing lead, playing bass, piano
guitar, singing songs he wrote which are among the most iconic in history.

What are most people that age doing? Certainly not singing Helter Skelter
while playing bass, while his hottie 30 something bride is in the wings!

The most interesting thing, is that for the first time, lately he is playing
"THE WORD" from Rubber Soul. Which is a Lennon song. a couple years
ago he was doing Please Please Me another Lennon number.

We all know when he does Help or A Day in the Life its a tribute to Lennon.
on more obscure songs like the Word, I wonder if he is doing it to insinuate
he wrote a big piece of that song, for the history books.

Sometimes Macca disputes the generally accepted historical record, and says he wrote half of songs, generally attributed to Lennon. With Lennon in the grave no one is left alive to speak up.

I admire Macca greatly, but on the other hand gotta defend Lennon.

Yeah he nailed out another killer set list for sure. I always love seeing what deeper cuts he's gonna toss in each time.

Nice to see Junior's Farm in there as well as Obla-Di-Obla-Da.

Also, very cool to see a return of I've Just Seen A Face :grinthumb
