Before you can upload an image for your avatar
I use .jpg files but I think you can also use .gif
The maximum size of your custom image is 160 by 160 pixels or 97.7 KB (whichever is smaller)

I transferred a pic of me in my truck, to a site that lets you upload your own pics. Can't remeber the site. Then went into the section of THIS site that lets you put in an avatar. Then I simply hit "browse" when asked for a pic and gave the URL to my pic.( I think) Whala!
