Candlebox was a 90's band where I was obsessed with their debut especially the power trio of singles that came off that. They took some of the best elements of grunge and delivered them like a powerhouse and actually set themselves apart from the movement not pleasing many contemporaries who thought they commercialized it. I think one of the main reasons is their lyrics were more straight forward and accessible which also helped them succeed IMO. Most of the songs deal with darker themes but they are sung with conviction. The difference is they seem to be sung as an outsider looking in like in as opposed to being the victim themselves. Like in the two singles You and Far Behind they are dealing with people who are destroying or have destroyed themselves through drugs.

Anyway, this c.d. is my vantage point of their best work:

and here are the classics I can still groove to!

So I know these guys have new material even now and I've liked some of it but I'm nowhere near worthy of representing it over someone who's continued to keep up. Tell me what I'm missing because I just wanted to get the ball rolling on a band that may have some 90's fans that are still into them.

Re: "The Official" Candlebox Thread

Hmm hearing some pearl jam influence, feels a bit commercialised. But sound like they are definately worth another listen

Yeah, I definitely think they fit the era but I think Lynch would agree if he saw this they were more coherent and less mumbly than Pearl Jam. :heheh: I think the commercialized aspect worked for them as they took a grunge sound that didn't alienate people but drew them in. :D

I think I have their debut album but I can't remember the songs right now. I'll be back after I give it a proper listen Sooty.

I'm very familiar with "Far Behind" but not much else. I did see a few copies of their self titled album at the local record exchange and picked it up to buy it but somewhere over the course of browsing the rest of their CD's I decided not to in favor of something else.

Call them what you will -- Grunge, Rock, Hair Metal -- this is an excellent debut album!

From the radio hits "Change" and "Far Behind" to the rocking album tracks "Don't You" and "You" to the lighter "Blossom" to the Robin Trower-like "No Sense" to the hard rocking White Zombie-ish "Arrow" and everything in between, this album will surely get your body moving!

Four out of five dentists surveyed would recommend Candlebox. :grinthumb

I still like Far Behind....i's a good tune. I also didn't think of "grunge" or "alternative" upon first hearing these guys. A decent rock band....they had hair too!!

Re: "The Official" Candlebox Thread

As Dave said earlier, Candlebox's first album was an excellent debut effort. Back when these songs were on the radio, literally everybody I know had the album. For a brief time, they were one of the biggest bands out there.

Soot has done a pretty good job describing that first album. Candlebox released a couple more albums in the 1990's, neither of which were as successful as their debut. The band went on hiatus for a few years while lead singer, Kevin Martin, surfaced with a solo project called Kevin Martin and the Hi Watts. Sometime in the early-to-mid 2000's, this group released an album independently.

I remember playing Kevin's solo stuff several times on my old radio show. I no longer have the cd to give you the "best" song titles but I recall the songwriting and performances as a whole to be very inspired. I'd certainly recommend it to anybody who is really into Candlebox.

Candlebox did get back together a few years ago for a greatest hits album and a new studio album (2008) and have been touring ever since.

Candlebox Comeback

Some things never change...it just goes to show you how the rock scene used to be when all the alt stations are still playing Candlebox, Alice in chains and Soundgarden... just heard the new Candlebox track “Believe in it” from their new album and not gonna lie, it sounds just as good if not better than they did back in the 90s
