The Yes Album was released in 1971. No, it's not the ultimate prog album or even Yes album but it's very good and one of their top five imo. It's actually the very first one I was exposed to since my dad had it.
You should try listening to Rush. They combined prog rock with heavy and hard rock...
Very sad news. I've been a big Rush fan for a long time(since the 80's). However, I only saw them four times. Anyway, this is a big blow to Rush fans and the drumming(and rock music)community. RIP the professor(Pratt).
Not sure. Maybe In through the out door. I'm probably the only person only the planet who thinks that though. To be honest it probably changes from time to time.
Ozric Tentacles are great(and all instrumental). Ed Wynne actually has a new album out. I kind of lost track of OT a while ago but Jurassic Shift is far and away one of the best prog albums of the 90's imo. Another good band from back then that are still around is Djam Karet. Although they are...
Sad news. I was playing their first two albums in my car recently(in honor of Ric). I have heartbeat City somewhere too but can't find it. Like others I had no idea he was 75. RIP Ric.
I like them all. I consider the metal stuff to be more a part of metal than prog though. It's called progressive metal not metal progressive. I've had arguments with people about this though so obviously not everyone sees it that way.
Ok, I just saw that the subcategories were taken from P.A...
I was a teenager in the 80's but rarely do I ever meet people my age who listen to what I did back then. I wasn't much into what was current at the time at all. Although at one point I was into the current hard rock and mainstream stuff I soon gravitated towards classic rock and classic...
Any progressive rock band from the seventies would qualify and today that would even include Yes, Genesis(pre pop era), Jethro Tull, ELP and King Crimson. Forgotten by hardcore music fans? No but forgotten by the general public? Absolutely. The key word is forgotten. A lot of bands people will...
The emphasis was more on image with hair metal though. Style over substance. That was my point.
I guess we will also have to agree to disagree about it being "heavy metal." Imo, for the most part it is not true heavy metal. Melodic hard rock yes, heavy metal no, not really. Too soft. If those...
First of all Def Leppard, GnR and Aerosmith were not(and are not) hair metal. Aside from that not all of it is horrible but I will still take grunge rock over it. To me there's a huge difference between regular hard rock/heavy metal and hair metal. As Eddie Trunk has said "hair metal" wasn't...
I don't know if any one person "invented" prog but if we were going to single out individual musicians then it would be either Frank Zappa or Keith Emerson so MOI or the Nice. :) Of course there were others(many of whom are referred to as proto prog these days).
To say that there's a lot more to prog rock beyond just ELP, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd or Rush or even Camel would be a massive understatement. Anyone even mildly interested in exploring the genre should check out the progarchives website. I won't list a link since I remember...
Hocus by Pocus by Focus. They have yodelling on this track but it's still instrumental. Other stuff by them too. Also try the snow goose album by Camel.
DMB is an ok band but I think the OP obviously doesn't know what prog is if he/she is listing them as a progressive rock band. I think there's a better case to be made for Phish being in this section and an even better one for Umphrey's McGee.
