Do you still listen to local radio stations?

I have my own collection of MP3s. I'll sometimes listen to talk radio, but it's mostly turned to shit as well.

From Bat Out of Hell A country version Another country version, from a live in concert amateur recording. Some old dude in his office with a 12 string Bonus video, Jim Steinman talking about this song.

The original, which frankly, wasn't all that good. Some folks claim this is really the original. Some of the covers, in no particular order.

The original, by Donovan, when "classic rock" was a much, much bigger tent. Then, one of the best impromptu jam versions ever recorded. Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield were working on an album to be called "Super Session". On the second day of the two-day session, Bloomfield was too strung out...

Favorite bands of the British Invasion?

I'm much more of a purist regarding what was and wasn't "British Invasion". The Brits "invaded" from around 1963 to 1965. Once the Brits knocked down the barriers, and the US bands caught up with them, the "invasion" was over, and British bands simply worked both sides of the Atlantic, as did...

Gibson Guitar Company ‘Running Out of Time’

That's to be expected. For an electric guitar to sound and play really good, the parts only have to be cut out accurately and put together right. The sound depends on the pickups, amp, and player more than anything else. But for an acoustic, the wood itself enters into the equation. It turns...

Gibson Guitar Company ‘Running Out of Time’

At this point, Epiphone is just another Gibson brand name. Don't be too sure about that. Gibson's patents are mostly expired. Everyone and their brother it seems makes some sort of clone of every significant Gibson/Epiphone model. You got that right. The actual difference in sound or...

Political correctness is a curse on humanity.

    KISS vs. Guns N‘ Roses

I like Kiss. They have a good beat and you can dance to it. I really miss being able to read all about my fave bands in Tiger Beat.

What Rock Songs Should Have Been Radio Hits?

ZZ Top had a song called La Grange. It wasn't a bad song, but the local classic rock station we listened to at work in Pittsburgh played it to death. It got so bad that whenever it came on, we'd change the station to the other classic rock station in town. One day right after we did that, there...

Last pair I'm posting tonight. Original by Yngwie Malmsteen, remake by Päivi "Capri" Virkkunen, lead singer for Amberian Dawn.

These are both versions of a movie soundtrack song. The original is from Streets of Fire. The remake is from the sequel (that at least four people have actually seen!) called Road to Hell. If you're a Jim Steinman fan (as I am), the original is a good song, the remake is, uh, "interesting"...

An original, by a rocker who looks like a lady (and an ugly one, at that!) Interesting take by the pop-tart who is the closest to being a rocker.

Don't forget, the bands don't always control what the label decides to do with the video. I have a copy of this song on my MP3 collection, but I got it from this video, which I now suspect was fan made. Seeing the "official" video took me by surprise.

Old rock songs which are nowadays politically incorrect

You have a very low threshold for "visceral".

No, we can just say, "Oscar Wilde was always full of sheep dip".

Sometimes, I think that Tori Amos is chilling, haunting, and dark. I'm not sure if I'd call her evil. If I was single, I'd think twice about wanting to date her.

What Rock Songs Should Have Been Radio Hits?

But that's almost the same over here. Broadcast radio is run by a handful of suits who don't give a damn about music, just getting ratings to sell more commercials. Nothing that doesn't fit into their tiny little boxes of format classifications gets played. The so-called "classic" rock stations...

What Rock Songs Should Have Been Radio Hits?

There's this one, by Queen from Night at the Opera. Brian May expressed regret in an interview that it wasn't released as a single. And this one from back in the 60's, when Vanilla Fudge's "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was a hit. For a while there, psychedelic versions of Motown songs were a...

Where do old rockers with old fans go when they get old?

When I say "relaxed", I'm mostly referring to comfortable seats, with maybe a convenient place to set my adult beverage down. The Chastain Amphitheater where my wife and I saw the Moody Blues was reasonably nice. The seats weren't the most comfy, but they were OK. I saw a Black Sabbath tribute...

Where do old rockers with old fans go when they get old?

There's a lot to be said for seeing a great musical performer or band in a relaxed, comfortable setting. And, I'll wager that a band full of people my age would enjoy being able to stay in the same place for an extended period of time, with no bus trips between each show, and having the audience...

Her recordings on "The Backyard Sessions" are all excellent. And her acting isn't bad. When she guest starred on Two and a Half Men as Jake's girlfriend, she was really funny. She had a great sense of comic timing.
